For the second time in his career, Milan Lucic recorded a Gordie Howe hat trick. Lucic assisted on David Krejci's first-period strike, beat Michal Neuvirth later in the period, then fought John Erskine in the third.

"You don't really go around looking for them," Lucic said of fights. "They just kind of happen. It's nice to get one, but I'm happy with the way our team played. All 20 guys."

Matt Hunwick, who coughed up the puck that led to Washington's only goal, gave the Bruins insurance in the third when his floater beat Semyon Varlamov.

* Tim Thomas stopped 35 of 36 pucks, including all 18 in the third. Given how hot Thomas is playing, the coaching staff might have to consider giving him a fourth straight start on Thursday at TD Garden.

* The Bruins were 0 for 4 on the power play. They failed to score during a 53-second five-on-three.
