Bruins lose series opener to Canadiens, 2-0

It's a final here. The Bruins have dropped the opening game of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals against the Montreal Canadiens, 2-0, at TD Garden.

Brian Gionta has done it again. Gionta potted his second goal of the game with a shot from the right circle. The Montreal captain has been a standout here.

3d period, 12:00, Montreal 1, Boston 0
Fans are chanting ``Let's Go Bruins!'' as if trying to will the team to score a goal.

The game is stopped for a TV timeout but it's becoming clear the 17,565 fans at TD Garden are not remotely satisfied with what they are seeing from the home team.

During the regular season the Bruins were 5-16-5 when trailing after the second period. Montreal finished the regular season with a record of 30-1-5 when leading after the second. Let's see if that changes tonight.

The Bruins outshot the Canadiens 18-6 in the period but so far, have nothing to show for it. The Canadiens will have a power play for 1 minute, 11 seconds to start the third period.

Brad Marchand has been whistled off for interference on Tomas Plekanec. The Canadiens are back on the power play.

According to the shot clock, the Bruins are outshooting Montreal by a margin of 14-6 in the period.

The Bruins went on the power play as a result of a Jaroslav Spacek interference penalty but failed to score.

The Bruins had a chance to tie it when goalie Carey Price made a mistake, giving up the puck to Bruins' enforcer Shawn Thornton, who fired a point-blank shot but Price recovered and made the stop.

20:00 - Both the Bruins and Canadiens had eight shots in the period. The Habs, however, were the only ones to put one home and they lead 1-0 heading into the first intermission.

7:07 - Montreal defenseman Roman Hamrlik is in the box for interference. The Bruins are going on their first power play of the game.

4:35 - Mark Recchi jamming away in front of the Montreal net. Goalie Carey Price holds him at bay.

2:45 - Montreal 1, Bruins 0 - Former Boston College star Brian Gionta has given the Habs an early lead. As expected, the packed TD Garden is less than pleased.
