Brandon Dubinsky and Michael Sauer scored in the third, while Derek Stepan added an empty-netter.
"When we took that 3-0 lead, all of a sudden guys went back and started to get cute again," said coach Claude Julien. "Not doing the simple things. That's what usually happens. At this stage of the season, you hope it's a real good lesson that we learned tonight. If you don't want to respect the game plan for 60 minutes, those things are going to happen."
In the second period, down 3-0, the Rangers kicked off a rally. The comeback started after Marc Staal, hugging the left-side wall, jumped to pick off an Adam McQuaid clearing attempt. Once Staal dropped the puck to his stick, he sent a slick backhand dish to Vinny Prospal. Prospal sent a one-touch pass to Wojtek Wolski, who hammered a slap shot on goal. Tim Thomas got most of Wolski's shot, but the puck dribbled through the netminder's pads. Prospal crashed the crease and jammed in the rebound at 11:34.
Prospal scored his second goal of the period to make it a 3-2 game. First, Derek Stepan beat Andrew Ference to a puck in the corner. Stepan got the puck to Wolski, who went behind the Boston net. Instead of holding his net-front position, McQuaid chased Wolski behind the net. With a step on McQuaid, Wolski passed the puck out front to Prospal. With nobody home in front, Prospal beat a helpless Thomas at 18:26.
In the first, the Bruins nearly skated the Rangers out of Madison Square Garden. The Bruins took a 1-0 lead at 15:16. Michael Ryder faked a slap shot, then passed to Johnny Boychuk at the right point. As Boychuk closed in, Daniel Paille gained position in front of the net. Boychuk connected with Paille, and the left wing beat Henrik Lundqvist for the game's opening goal.
Later in the first, some strong cycling by the first line led to the Bruins' second goal. Milan Lucic won a puck battle deep in the zone, then found David Krejci in front. Lundqvist got in front of Krejci's shot. But Nathan Horton popped in the rebound at 16:53.
After 20 minutes, the Bruins had a 19-5 shot advantage. Chris Kelly gave the Bruins a three-goal lead at 10:32 of the second. On a two-on-one rush, Kelly snapped a wrister through Lundqvist.
