WASHINGTON - It's a final here at the Verizon Center in the nation's capital. The Bruins have taken a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarterfinals on the strength of a 4-3 victory over Washington Monday night.

Bruins captain Zdeno Chara scored the winner with 1 minute 53 seconds remaining in regulation. Game 4 is Thursday night in Washington. Daniel Paille, Rich Peverley, and Brian Rolston also scored for Boston.

Third period
18:07 - Boston 4, Washington 3 - Bruins' captain Zdeno Chara has given his team the lead again late in this one with the teams skating four a side. Chara beat Braden Holtby on a one-timer from the right point that went off the stick of Capitals defenseman Roman Hamrlik before it sailed into the net.

16:46 - Boston 3, Washington 3 - Nicklas Backstrom has been called for crosschecking Brad Marchand. The Bruins are going on the power play.

14:00 - Boston 3, Washington 3 - Brooks Laich has tied the game. Nicklas Backstrom sent a long lead pass up to Laich, who raced in from the right circle, cut into the slot and lifted a forehand shot that rattled off the left post and in past Tim Thomas. You weren't expecting this one to end in regulation, were you?

10:17 - Boston 3, Washington 2 - Dennis Seidenberg was whistled off for roughing. But the Bruins killed it off.

3:01 - Bruins' forward Brad Marchand drew a penalty the hard way, getting slashed in the groin by Jason Chimera. Boston went on the power play but couldn't generate much.

1:02 - Boston 3, Washington 2 - The Bruins have taken their first lead of the game with veteran Brian Rolston beating goalie Braden Holtby from the doorstep.

Second period
20:00 - Boston 2, Washington 2 - Through 40 minutes, the Bruins and Capitals are deadlocked. The teams have already scored a combined four goals, which is more than in either of the first two games. The Capitals are outshooting the Bruins by a 21-19 margin.

13:19 - Milan Lucic and Jason Chimera are both in the penalty box for their sparring session before a faceoff. The teams are skating four a side.

9:28 - Boston 2, Washington 2 - Daniel Paille has tied the game. Defenseman Greg Zanon put the puck on net from the left point. It hit Paille and then goalie Braden Holtby and bounced back to Paille, who backhanded it in at the right post.

6:03 - Washington 2, Boston 1 - Nicklas Backstrom has been called for tripping, nullifying the Capitals' power play and the teams are skating four on four for 1:15. Then the Bruins will have a 45-second power play.

5:18 - Rich Peverley has been called for hooking, putting the Capitals on the power play.

4:19 - Benoit Pouliot had an offensive chance when he skated into the Washington zone and fire a shot from high between the circles but goalie Braden Holtby gloved it.

0:48 - Washington 2, Boston 1 - Capitals' captain Alex Ovechkin answered right back some 13 seconds after the Bruins pulled even. Ovechkin won a foot race to a loose puck and beat Tim Thomas with a shot from the right circle and the Capitals are back on top.

:0:35 - Boston 1, Washington 1 - Rich Peverley tied the game with the teams skating four a side. His shot from the top of the left circle hit off the glove of goaltender Braden Holtby and then glanced off his mask before finding its way into the net.

First period
20:00 - Lots of tempers flaring as the first period came to a close. Chippiness on both teams. Zdeno Chara and Mike Green doing a little dance at the end and Milan Lucic and Nicklas Backstrom getting under each other's skin. Should be an interesting second period now that the Capitals have taken a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

16:00 - Washington 1, Boston 0 - Alexander Semin has put the Capitals on top with a power-play goal.

Apologies for the technical difficulties. There was an issue with the wireless in the press box.

10:05 - The Bruins had a nice offensive flurry with Tyler Seguin and Brad Marchand but so far, no scoring to be had.

9:05 - The Bruins nearly had a gift goal in front of the net. Goaltender Braden Holtby went to clear the puck and wound up fanning on it and losing his stick in the process. Defenseman Mike Green struggled to clear it as well and although Daniel Paille was on the doorstep, he couldn't pop it home.

6:00 - John Carlson fired a long lead pass to Marcus Johansson, who tested Tim Thomas from the top of the left circle but Thomas saw it all the way.

3:14 - The Capitals killed off the Boston power play.

1:14 - Alexander Semin has been called for tripping Brad Marchand. The Bruins are on the power play.

0:27 - Alex Ovechkin just delivered a heavy hit to Bruins' defenseman Dennis Seidenberg, trying to set the tone for tonight.

The Verizon Center is awash in red Capitals sweaters but no sign of an Obama mask. Will be on the lookout as the Bruins are now skating onto the ice.
