Final: Bruins 4, Captials 1: The Bruins won for the fifth time in their last six games and for the second consecutive time at TD Garden to improve to 19-4-3 (10-2-1 at home) after Saturday afternoon's impressive 4-1 victory over the Washington Capitals (11-15-1). Anton Khudobin (37 saves) picked up the victory in net to improve to 5-2-0 this season.
Bruins 4, Capitals 1, 10:32: Saw this one coming from a mile away, especially when Nathan Horton was in the box at the beginning of the period jawing away at Matt Hendricks. Horton pointed at the Bruins bench, no doubt informing Hendricks that Shawn Thornton was requesting his presence on the ice for a fight. Problem was, Thornton had to get in line behind Adam McQuaid, who took apart Hendricks after a face off midway through the third period. Both were sent off for 5-minute fighting majors. Thornton jumped in and was hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
Bruins 4, Capitals 1, 2:41, PPG: Eight seconds after Jack Hillen was sent off for slashing, Rich Peverley made the Capitals pay when he chipped home a dirty rebound of Milan Lucic's bid to give the B's a three-goal lead. Lucic was credited with his third assist of the game, a career-high, while Krejci also received a helper, marking his 300th NHL point.
End of period: Bruins 3, Capitals 1: Brad Marchand picked up his first figthting major of the season when he took on Mike Ribeiro at 19:41. Marchand, who recorded two fighting majors in 76 games last season, won his bout with Ribeiro, landing several uppercuts and overhand rights. But it served as the undercard to a violent dust-up that erupted nine seconds later between Matt Hendricks, who had been spoiling for a fight, and Nathan Horton, who wound up pinning Hendricks. Both were sent off for fighting majors. All in all, an entertaining period for the Bs.'
Bruins 3, Capitals 1, 8:02: Krejci giveth, he taketh away, then he giveth again when he set up Andrew Ference's first goal of the season. Krejci carried the puck deep into the zone before sending a centering pass to Nathan Horton, who made a nifty no-look reverse pass to Ference, who beat Neuvirth top shelf. It was Horton's third point of the game (1 goal, 2 assists) and Krejci's second point of game (1 goal, 1 assist). So far, the Horton-Krejci-Lucic line, much-maligned for their lack off offensive production, has tallied eight out of a possible nine points.
Bruins 2, Capitals 1, 1:24; Penalty: Adam McQuaid and Matt Hendricks were sent off after the Capitals center went after Nathan Horton, which drew a swift response from Andrew Ference. McQuaid, who jousted with Hendricks earlier in the first period, took over and stood up to Hendricks. Both were sent off for matching roughing penalties.
Bruins 2, Capitals 1, 1:24: Bruins suffered self-inflicted wound when David Krejci, who was just nine seconds into his shift after serving out an interference penalty, ricocheted a loose puck in front of the Bruins net off the left skate of Johnny Boychuk past B's netminder Anton Khudobin. Marcus Johansson was credited with the unassisted goal that pulled the Caps within 1.
Bruins 2, Capitals 0, 19:45: Krejci was sent off for interference, leaving the Bruins to play a man short for the last 15 seconds of the first period, and putting the Captials on the man advantage for the first 1:15 of the second.
Bruins 2, Capitals 0, 17:15: Lucic came up with another huge assist, fishing the puck from behind the net to set up David Krejci, who came swopping in from left point to put a one-timer past Neuvirth on the far side post. It was Krejci's seventh goal of the season and Lucic's second assist of the game and 12th on the season. Nathan Horton was also credited with an assist, giving him and Lucic multiple-point nights.
Bruins 1, Capitals 0, 14:12: Nathan Horton potted his eighth goal of the season when he beat Capitals goaltender Michal Neuvirth from the slot, one-timing Milan Lucic's crisp centering pass from behind the Capitals net. Lucic was credited with his 11th assist of the season while Bruins captain Zdeno Chara was also credited with a helper, giving him a four-game point streak.
Bruins 0, Capitals 0, 5:41: Bruins get away with one there when Brad Marchand avoids a boarding call after he flattened Joey Crabb from behind into the sideboards. A mini-scrum broke out with Matt Hendricks and Adam McQuaid engaging in some extracurricular face washing. No harm. No foul.
Pregame: Greetings from TD Garden where the Bruins, attired in green game sweaters during pregame warmups in honor of St. Patrick's Day, will host the Washington Capitals. The B's planned to auction off the green warmups during the game. We're about five minutes away from the dropping of the puck. We'll be here to bring you live updates from the game.
