Andrew Ference to have disciplinary hearing

Andrew Ference will have a disciplinary hearing on the phone today with Brendan Shanahan. The call will center on Ference’s check to the head of Mikhail Grabovski in the first period of last night’s 4-1 Bruins win.

On the play, both players pursued the puck in the corner. Ference’s left elbow appeared to catch Grabovski on the side of the head. Grabovski hit the deck but was not injured. No penalty was called.

When asked about the incident after the game, Ference said he couldn’t recall the play.

Ference is the team’s left-side defenseman on the second pairing. If Ference is suspended, either Aaron Johnson or Dougie Hamilton would dress.

If Johnson plays, the left-shot defenseman could be paired with Johnny Boychuk in Ference’s spot. If Hamilton dresses, Boychuk would most likely move up with Zdeno Chara. Dennis Seidenberg, Chara’s partner, would switch to the left side and skate with Hamilton. The third pair of Wade Redden and Adam McQuaid would remain intact.

Ference is not considered a repeat offender. Ference was fined for his obscene gesture during the first round of the 2011 playoffs against Montreal.
