The Bruins recalled goaltender Niklas Svedberg from Providence on Friday morning, the team announced.

The goalie nearly made the cut out of training camp, but the team elected to go with Chad Johnson instead. It had seemed like a good move, with Johnson starting the season 6-1. But Johnson struggled with wraparound goals in a loss to lowly Buffalo in his last time up.

Coach Claude Julien said this morning that Svedberg was recalled so the team could have a look at the 24 year old. who has had an up-and-down season thus far in Providence.

"We’re going to have a look at him in the next little while here," Julien said. "Not tonight, but maybe tomorrow or the game after. I think he’s earned that. We told him that after having such a good camp that we’d bring him up at some point, get him some games. So that’s what we’re doing right now."

Svedberg has played 20 games for Providence and has an 11-5-3 record with one shutout, a .907 save percentage and a 2.91 goals-against average. He will be the backup goalie tonight against the Senators, with Tuukka Rask starting in goal.

"It’s experience," Julien said. "He played a preseason game that I thought he played really well. He’s coming off I think a shutout last night as well, so he’s earned his opportunity, and like I said we told him we’d give him that so it gives us an idea where he is in his development. At the same time certainly, like I said, earned that opportunity by his play."
