MONTREAL -- Bruins defenseman Johnny Boychuk has been taken off the Bell Centre ice on a stretcher after being injured in the first period of the Bruins-Canadiens game. Boychuk was hurt when Montreal's Max Pacioretty checked him into the end boards in the Canadiens zone.

Boychuk was in immediate pain, on his hands and knees, before medical staff carefully positioned him on his side, then onto his back. With help from Zdeno Chara and Milan Lucic, Boston and Montreal trainers lifted Boychuk, who was lying on a board, onto a stretcher. Boychuk was taken via ambulance to Montreal General Hospital.

Pacioretty was called for boarding.

UPDATE: According to the Twitter account of brother Sam Boychuk, the defenseman hurt his back.
