MONTREAL — On a skip pass down through the neutral zone, the Bruins found themselves caught off guard on the long dish from Nathan Beaulieu, leading to a Max Pacioretty breakaway goal in front of Zdeno Chara.
Pacioretty's goal came 15:24 into the second period and was assisted by Beaulieu and Mike Weaver.
Just two minutes later, after a high sticking penalty by the Bruins' Gregory Campbell at 17:13, Montreal's Thomas Vanek capitalized on a rebound in front of Tuukka Rask as the Canadiens went up 3-0 on the power play goal. The goal was assisted Pacioretty and Andrei Markov.
Rask has 22 saves on 25 shots on goal. Montreal's Carey Price has 17 saves.
The Bruins had a power play opportunity of their own in the second period, but failed to get anything out of it again. They're now 0 for 2 on the power play and are 1 for 2 on the penalty kill.
With the Bruins down 3-0, there will be greater pressure to have one of those famous third period comebacks than before.
