First period recap: After Lars Eller Goal, Rask Settles In

MONTREAL ó Lars Eller's goal was embarrassing.

Bruins defenseman Kevan Miller failed to clear a puck near Boston's crease, coupled with Tuukka Rask failing to clear the puck, and Eller just swooped in to pot the easy puck just 2:11 into the game.

Montreal leads 1-0, thanks in large part to the mistake. But also because Rask was able to compose himself right away afterward. Just a few minutes later, he made a diving stick save on a shot from Brendan Gallagher that could've put Boston in 2-0 hole.

Rask faced 11 shots in the period, and at one point the Bruins were being outshot 8-3. But as the period came to a close, the Bruins closed the gap to 11-8. Rask was his usual stellar self after allowing Eller's goal.

The Bruins power play appeared to be listless in the first. Canadiens defenseman Mike Weaver was whistled for high sticking, but the Bruins were unable to come up with one shot in two minutes of play.

The Bruins are likely getting an earful from coach Claude Julien in the staff. They had made a point earlier in the day that the team needed to play just as desperate. There's nobody on the Bruins roster right now that can claim they're playing desperate. We'll see if that changes.
