For the second straight season, Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final had to be settled in overtime, but in the final minute of regulation, it took phenomenal saves by both goaltenders to make sure it got that far.
First, Jonathan Quick had to make a stellar save on Carl Hagelin’s shorthanded breakaway with just over 40 seconds to play in the third to keep the game tied.
No more than 10 seconds later, it was Henrik Ludqvist at the other end, who used the knob of his stick to punch out a bid by Jeff Carter.
The Kings would eventually win it 4:36 into overtime as Justin Williams beat Lundqvist after a giveaway by the Rangers.
