The 86-year drought and Curse of the Bambino ended in 2004 when the Red Sox defeated the Cardinals in four games. Manny Ramirez, World Series MVP, hit .412 in the series and clubbed a first-inning homer in Game 3.The World Series title capped a compelling postseason in which the Red Sox rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the American League Championship Series to beat the Yankees.
In the final round, first-year Red Sox manager Terry Francona beat Hall of Fame-bound Tony La Russa and 24-year-old Albert Pujols. The Cardinals duo later won the World Series in 2006.
