To say that the number of entrants has grown is an understatement. The number of runners has increased dramatically since the first Boston Marathon.
1897
There were 15 runners, all men, all American.
1996
Most entrants to date with 38,708 runners celebrating the Marathons 100th anniversary.
Runners from 19 countries have won the Boston Marathon, with US runners winning the most at 41.
2004
There were 17,926 runners: 11,279 men and 6,647 women representing 76 countries.
