This is better than trading him. Trading him would have meant that we would have needed to take on salary (since no team actually would want Manny and his bloated, unmoveable contract). When Manny wants to play, he's one of the best hitters in the game. His detractions are off the field and in any team sport (but especially baseball and football), clubhouse dynamic is just as important as on the field performance.

Great move, Manny and David are both best as DH, who would you rather have for the $$? Manny wants to go home, George needs hitting, perfect fit. Sox would rather see Manny than Vlad in left for NY so another bonus. $20M adds a #2 starter, extends a couple of position contracts (Nomer, Jason, or Trot), and a couple of pitiching contracts (Derrick and Mike). Note: remember that $20M doesn't have to pay contracts, just the difference from their existing deals.
