Man oh Manny

What do you think of the decision to put Manny Ramirez on irrevocable waivers? Will another team -- (gulp) Yankees -- take on the $104 million remaining on his eight-year, $160 million contract? If no team claims Ramirez, will the All-Star slugger get traded?

I don't understand how anyone can think this is a bad move. Manny is a great pure hitter...but that's about it. He nearly single-handedly destroyed "team chemistry" late in the season. He hasn't proven himself as a clutch hitter ('03 playoffs, '99 playoffs). If the sox are lucky enough to unload his 20 million, they could have a slugger and a quality starter for the same price. This isn't about putting more money in John Henry's wallet...its about using the money the team has responsibly and getting as much as possible for it.

It's a great idea folks; if it works. The guy is a great hitter but is overpaid. For what he brings to the team I'd rather see them use the money for another #2 starter.

I am glad the Sox Management took a stand. The year before, Manny couldn't be bothered to run out a ground ball to first base. This year, he couldn't be bothered to pinch hit during a crucial game because of a sore throat. He is the epitome of an unjustly overpaid professional athlete. I suspect many fans will not like this move, but try to remember that other teams that run their organizations with pride and discipline (the Yankees and the Patriots come to mind) don't put up with this type of player; they get rid of them for one simple reason; no one player is ever bigger than the team. Until Manny realizes that, his character (which should be worth more to him than his contract) will never be worthy of the accolades his numbers achieve.

I think it is great, he only put effort into playing when he wants to. He doesn't play hard everyday, example Trott Nixon gives it his all as wellas Todd Walker , they both give 150 % everyday. He did seem to be having a better time in the dugout this year as a somewhat of a team player but I think we can do a lot with his money and get some more good players.

I do not think it is merely coincidence that, at the same time, the Red Sox raised ticket prices (again). I hope the Red Sox fans do not get distracted by the Manny news to overlook that ticket prices are skyrocketing in Boston. I wonder, if Manny does get picked up by another team (which the Red Sox brass knows is highly unlikely), will they forgo the raise in ticket prices? (Answer: of course, not!)

Chris, Boston

Lets hope the Yanks pick him up, so we can sign Vlad for less.

Tom, Boston

In 3 years he hit over.300 - won a batting title - hit 30+ HRs and 100+ RBI. Sox would have not won the Wild Card without him - he may need a change in attitude, but not change of uniform!! - KEEP HIM

Kevin, Dennis, Mass

Great!!! i'm sure the Yankees will jump on this right away, if not even better. I think Theo is thinking a number 1 starter which is what win's World Series. GO SOX!!!!!

Culpa, Woburn

I don't want the Yankees to take him but I think we can spend the money we are paying him and get 3 quality players....I don't know who noticed but guys like Nixon & Walker who make much less did more when it counted. Save the money and keep Ortiz, Walker, Nomah, Pedro, Tek, and get a better starting pitcher other than John "hanging curveball" Burkett

Darren, Braintree

Who is to say that Manny didn't ask to be released after Grady's contract was not renewed\extended? This might be mutually beneficial. If no one takes him, it lets Manny know once and for all, Boston is his home and the lack of takers might motivate him. If someone does, then Epstein can have the ability to secure the core players (Nomar, Lowe, Tek, Nixon etc) and add pitching. They need the money to get ready for LAP (life after Pedro). The Sox would be insane to sign a 105 pitch starter to a 17 million dollar per year deal.
