What do you think of the decision to put Manny Ramirez on irrevocable waivers? Will another team -- (gulp) Yankees -- take on the $104 million remaining on his eight-year, $160 million contract? If no team claims Ramirez, will the All-Star slugger get traded?

Page 37 Strictly an attempt at a market correction and I applaud Larry Lucchino. I like Manny and agree that he is one of the most feared hitters in modern day baseball. However, MLB is in big trouble due to contracts like Manny's. This will set a precedent, I hope. Let's pray the Yankees grab him up...Make a deal for A-Rod and ship Nomar to LA. Steve, Berkley,MA This is a good move by Theo. A lot of franchises (e.g. like LA) who is in much need of a power presence in the middle, and we need to restructure payroll in the next few years to remain competitive (at least, with the Yankees). Plus, it gives us incentives in revamp the pitching staff! Marc, Chestnut Hill The Red Sox Brass should go back to the Golden Rule: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The team *almost* went all the way this year. I think they should keep things as they are and just find a new manager at this point. Karen, Newburyport, MA Why all the Manny bashing? The guy is arguably the best all-around hitter in the American League. He won the batting title in '02 and came in second by one point in '03. His patient hitting style has rubbed off on many of his teammates and made them better. There is no way all of the new guys would have had the years they did without Manny being the cornerstone in the middle of the lineup. And don't tell me he is a bad fielder because he's not. He's easily as good as Trot. Sure, he is overpaid but he is a great player. Don't blame him because Duquette offered him too much money. If a team doesn't claim him then this move will totally backfire. Matt, Newton Good Riddance! Paul, Weare, NH I think it is a good idea. It will free up a ton of money to sign the rest of the team. Then the whole team will stay in tact. Jason, fitchburg I think this is exactly what the Sox need. This may well turn out to help the Red Sox in the same way getting rid of Randy Johnson, Alex Rodriguez, and Griffey helped the Mariners--by adding young talent and payroll flexibility. Drew, Allston, MA Please put "Pedro the princess" up on waivers as well. I hear they have some nice beauty salons for both of them in New York or L.A. Buck, Woburn I like the move....if it works. Ideally the Yanks will pick up Manny and his enormous contract which should also prevent the Yanks from signing Vlad. We can sign Vlad and stick him in left or right, and eventually sign Castillo at second. Our club will have an added dimension of speed and power and we won't be talking next year about Manny's lack of positive presence in the clubhouse. Mike, Melrose You can replace Manny (especially with $20m). But how 'bout the guts (read: *alls) of Theo and the ownership! Shows me they 'll do anything to improve this team. I'd rather see them get creative and take some chances than sit back and lose the core of the team (Noma, Tek, Trot, DLowe) because their hands are tied to that contract. From that perspective, it's great!
