Man oh Manny

What do you think of the decision to put Manny Ramirez on irrevocable waivers? Will another team -- (gulp) Yankees -- take on the $104 million remaining on his eight-year, $160 million contract? If no team claims Ramirez, will the All-Star slugger get traded?

Hasta la bye-bye Man-ito! You're a child! You get millions of dollars for what? When you feel like playing? This is a bold move. Free up some cash and get some arms.

Eric, NYC

Good Bye!!! Farewell!!

Carol, Boston

I thought it would have been a good move to trade him but waiving him is nuts the Yankees will most certainly claim him and solve there right field problem. Wih Nomat saynig he wants to play on the West Coast just what are they thinking. So much for the playoffs anytime soon. Unless they sign Validmar G.

I believe that Manny is a good player but baseball players now days dont play for a win but play for the $.

Hareza, Pittsburgh

I think it is a great idea. Pedro should be next, baseball doesn't have any room for these pre-madonna types! Hats off to the management!

Great message sent to an overpaid, selfish player. While Manny can hit, he is a liability in all other aspects of the game (including team chemistry). The guy had one meaningful hit in the post-season (Oakland game five) and he posed for a photo-shoot like it was a game-winning homer. Let Planet Manny exist in another solar system and take the money you saved to find some hungry young team players.

I love Manny, it would be hard to let him go, a great hitter, one of the best there is. However, we signed him in the period of bad contracts and with the money we pay manny we can shore up our team in many ways, i.e. Mariners and Griffey. I think it's bait for the Yankees. They pick up Manny and his salary and fill their outfield need. While we would have money to go after premier free agents. Many throw around the idea of Vlad. I think we could go after a Javy Lopez, move Varitek to first, fleet footed Millar to Left. Then we go after a premier pitcher (plenty out there) a Colon or Millwood and a premier bullpen man, i.e. Foulke, Guardado. Overall, we improve the team and take the Series in four next year.

Paul, West Hartford

Hmmm, If someone bites, we free up capital to extend Nomie and Tek, then we sign maybe Vlad and/or a pitcher? Maybe Millwood, maybe Petitte...or maybe we go after 2 top pitchers (remember, Pedro is at the end of his contract soon). No brainer...if someone bites, we win, if no one bites, Theo and company have sent out the message, "Cowboy up or hit the trail!" Kudos Red Sox! Bold and refreshing move! (Hey Theo, did you go to the Aurbach school of General Managing??)

Jim, Stoughton

There is no way any team would possibly take Manny when you can have Vlad Guerrero a much better overall player for about 2-5 mill less per season. Manny is a great ballplayer but way overpaid. Funny how everyone has selective amnesia when it comes to Manny though. You would have thought the Sox had one the WS a few yrs. back when the Manny signing was announced. My how things change. I don't recall a single person saying it was a dumb signing back then.

manny gave us some great memories. he has one of the best swings i've ever seen. but this move gets rid of a clubhouse problem and frees up the money to extend the contracts of tek, nomar, pedro, dlowe and trot.
