Man oh Manny

What do you think of the decision to put Manny Ramirez on irrevocable waivers? Will another team -- (gulp) Yankees -- take on the $104 million remaining on his eight-year, $160 million contract? If no team claims Ramirez, will the All-Star slugger get traded?

Why not get rid of a guy who consistently is hitting around .320, over 100 RBIs, 30 HR, and decent defense... they come around often. Let's make sure we get rid of Nomar, too. He's too much money for what he does. Idiots.

Andy, Boston

If this move is intended to free money to sign other players, I support it, but if this is just an attempt to get rid of Manny, still a great hitter and exciting player, then this is a big mistake.

Indeed it is a bit of a shock, but reviewing Manny's year and attitude, putting him up for bid to free up his salary to acquire a "better" player seems like a good idea. Sorry, Manny.

I like the move though if no one claims him, we'll really have a problem on our hands. Thinking of a Seinfeld episode, I could see Steinbrenner pass on this "for spite" knowing the Sox want him to pay the salary. It's a chess move for sure and it's now George's move. By the way, to all the Manny lovers, we'll now see if he's so great and worth the money. I say, good riddance!

Great idea. Save the money, go for pitching.

I was taken aback at first but I think it sends a sound message to all the superstars on the team that everyone is expendable and your star stautus means you should leading by example (clubhouse & effort). These superstars behave like the team owes them more than what they owe the team. I think the devotion & commitment to baseball teams has been dead for years, the players are only devoted to the green paper and not to the green fields. Its hard to feel sorry for a guy who makes $20 million. George S will just try to buy another World Series anyway. Best of luck to you MAnny.

I think it sends a message......no more $$$ the buck stops here

I think we have seen how he performs - when he is in the mood. Get rid of the Prima Donna. We need people on the team that want to work with the team and not against it. Use the $$ saved to keep the stars like Jason V, Derek L, Kevin M., Tim W. get some young blood players that are in good shape, can run when they hit the ball.

Wow, bold move. I think it's great, Manny may be a great player, but if you can't count on him to play to his level all the time if he's not constantly treated with kid gloves, then I say, GREAT MOVE. I'm happy to see the RS front office being bold, proactive, and wanting to bring a championship to the team. I'm all for it, GO RED SOX!

Goooo Theo... EXCELLENT MOVE!!!! (if it works!) You've placed raw hamburg in front of a dog who has room on his leash if he chooses to go for it. (Georgie Porgie and his millions). Now...follow up with Pedro. He's aging, folks, no question about it and is truly, in fact, now only a 6 inning pitcher. Forward thinking will keep the Sox rolling. Great move!
