What do you think of the decision to put Manny Ramirez on irrevocable waivers? Will another team -- (gulp) Yankees -- take on the $104 million remaining on his eight-year, $160 million contract? If no team claims Ramirez, will the All-Star slugger get traded?

Page 56 Let the Yankees have him...He said publicly thats where he wants to play anyhow...maybe he will Hustle with the yankees....we should be able to get a top notch pitcher and replacemnt outfielder for the money they were paying him. Mike, Lowell Smart business decision, but wonder what the repurcussions will be. The Sox won all those games through hitting, and when one person wasn't hitting the rest of the team was. But you can't count on Millar and Mueller and Ortiz to have career years back to back. If Manny leaves, who do the sox get to take his bat in his place? I don't think anyone will claim him. It's a lot of money and the market is coming back down. I think the red sox will end up with Manny, and they'll have to find a way to trade him if they really want to free up the contract, and the only way that will happen is if Manny has a couple of monster seasons, but even then its a long shot, because questions about his longevity will start coming into play. Manny stays in Red Sox nation. Hank, Dedham Great, great move. Manny is a good hitter, but he is just too expensive. With this money saved, the Sox can keep the other stars and get more pitching. I privately hoped that they could trade him, but I understand why this is a better approach (in return for Manny, we would undoubtedly get an overpaid guy from another team) Michael, Boulder, CO Since the Yankees are the most likely (?only) team able to purchase his contract, the Red Sox better have a solid plan for acquiring players that more than compensates for the loss of his bat. As for the loss of the person...good riddance! Alan, Mansfield Fast forward to Oct. 2004. Last week of the season. .342 51 132. Manny closing in on wrapping up the triple crown..... in pinstripes. MO, Lawrence While we need to get out of this contract, this is risky as the only team 'free spending' enough to take Manny are the NY Yankees. While it will help us, I won't enjoy seeing Manny blast the ball over the Monster in Pin Stripes. Chris, Fitchburg This is the best decision the Red Sox managment ever made. Overpaid, arrogant, wrong attitude, lazy. He constantly sends the wrong message to our children. Bring in more decent, honest, hard-working players, like the rest of the team. Next: get rid of Pedro too. Sancho, Waltham Great move by the ownership! You da man Theo! Manny may be a great hitter, but no where near the 20 million he's getting. This sets us up perfectly to trade Nomar in the off-season when we can get something for him. We won't get anything when he's a Free Agent at the end of next season. I think A-Rod would look great in Red and White!! John, Woburn If you look on the bright side, by saving $100 million the Red Sox will DEFINITLEY lower ticket prices.....oops, in other news, the Red Sox announced today a 4.5% increase in ticket prices. Kram Not a bad idea. They're trying to free up cash so they can sign players like Nomar, Pedro, Varitek, Lowe, and Nixon, and go out and find players for cheaper money who are just as good. Plus they won't have the headache in the clubhouse when Manny drifts off into Manny-land every year.
