What do you think of the decision to put Manny Ramirez on irrevocable waivers? Will another team -- (gulp) Yankees -- take on the $104 million remaining on his eight-year, $160 million contract? If no team claims Ramirez, will the All-Star slugger get traded?

Page 57 this is PRECISELY what they should do!!!!!!! yes, he is a good hitter but what is the percentage of times that he jogs down the first base line when he should be RUNNING!!!!!!!! and the same when he is out in left field - both literally and figuratively!!! Jeff, Medford I advocate less tolerance for 'behavioral baggage' in pro sports. Manny is a great talent, but I feel he has not 'proved' much worth in the very important catagories of leadership, hustle, chemistry, or clutch-hitting ability. For the salary paid to this man I think he has to do more than just be an awesome offensive force. I don't care if he wants to be a loner, or not talk to the media, but he could still lead quietly (like Trot or Jason) with consistent hustle. I'll take that anyday over bravado. I do admit his defensive play improved this last season, and that's a start. To me, how you play the game is more important than winning. With that said, I think that if you play the game with a solid work ethic (a la Trot Nixon, Jason Varitek, or Bill Mueller), then good things will happen. Tom, Rocky Mount, NC Look for another big market team like Chicago or LA pony up the $ for this head case. I wonder if he will sell his penthouse? trash can, slowtown See ya. The guys got no respect for the game. They should have let him go when he walked out to left field with a water bottle in his back pocket. Where was he in the ALCS? Mike, Pawtucket/RI Not a good move. These owners think they're so much smarter than everyone, that's the problem. He's pretty much the best hitter in the game. Why give him away so you can get less for less? These owners are on a highway to failure and old skool Boston clubhouse troubles. Teddy Ballgame, Boston, MA 1) Yankees will have a tough time not taking him given his NYC roots 2) Lowers the market for others like Vlad if the Yankees take Manny 3) Very clear that management will trade Manny otherwise--he is gone period. 4) Ownership is determined to put their team in place--If you own the company and have lost with Dan's team, you will absolutely clean house and field a team with "your guys", people who reflect your values, style and vision. 5) Besides the Yankees, perhaps the Dodgers or Mets will take a run after him--who else has the money? Matt, Oakton, VA This move could really backfire on the Sox. What happens if no one picks him up, which is the most likely scenario and then Manny decides he wants to be traded because he feels "disrespected". The sox then have to trade someone that they couldn't give away. This forces them to eat a good chunk of his contract and you get nothing in return to make up for his 35hr, 110rbi and .320BA. For all you out there that think this will send a msg. to Manny that he better shape up I have two words "guaranteed contracts" this isn't football folks and Manny isn't going anywhere. Jamie, Waltham Instead of placing him on waivers, couldn't the Sox restructure his contract so they could sign more players? Oh yeah, Manny would really go for that. Bob, Maine I think its great! Even if the Yankees pick him up it will free up money for the sox to take a run at Vlad, Colon, Millwood or Tejada. Or maybe its a move to strength the team for the winter of 2004. Greg, Baton Rouge If the Yankees pick up Ramirez it will be a brilliant coup an the Red Sox will unload an overpaid, overated ball player which will probably result in the Yankees being finicallt unable to resign Andy Pettite. In a perfest world the Sox would then use Ramirez's money to sign Pettite.
