Man oh Manny

What do you think of the decision to put Manny Ramirez on irrevocable waivers? Will another team -- (gulp) Yankees -- take on the $104 million remaining on his eight-year, $160 million contract? If no team claims Ramirez, will the All-Star slugger get traded?

The Sox have a bad history of dumps. Lynn, Fisk and Bill Lee departures didn't improve the teams they left. Shall we mention the Babe? Ortiz and Martinez could end up bummed with the move and their production dip. One the other hand, if they can cement the rest of the team and get a good replacement ce la vie. But these things have tended to sink the boat not rock it.

If this frees up money to get Vlad I'm all for it. Manny is a cancer to the team and doesn't even want to be here.

JT, Reading

How about this? Trade Nomar to the Dodgers for Gagne and then sign Tejada as a free agent?

Jon Stearns, Lebanon, NH

I think it is the first bad move Young Theo has made. 1) I don't think the Yankees will take him. They are waiting for Vlad Guerrero. And the chances of another team being able to afford/want him is remote. 2) Now you will have to trade him, with his baggage. Good Luck!. 3) If neither of the two happens, which I think is likely, you'll be stuck with a worse attitude than before. So much for a cohesive unit! 4) Hard to replace a run producing, hitting machine like him. Why did Mueller win the batting title (by just one over Manny)? Because, for the most part, he was able to bat 7th in the lineup and had guys like Ramirez and Ortiz on base ahead of him. Mueller didn't look so good in the post season when Ramirez, Ortiz, and especially Millar were not hitting.

Let the Yankees have him. I'll take Nomar, Ortiz, Varitek, Nixon and Bartolo Colon instead.

Manny is incredibly talented and was vital to the success of the Sox this year. That said, with his immaturity and the Sox payroll issues, this is a good move if for no other reason than it sends a message that the Sox are willing to listen to trade offers and that the Sox are committed to taking any money saved on Manny, and using it to bolster the club via free agency (Guerrero, Colon, Castillo, etc.) and/or spend it on the guys like Nomar, Pedro, Varitek, Nixon, etc. who represent the type of players we need in Boston.

I believe this move is a smart one, considering we have Nomar, Pedro, D Lowe, Nixon, and Varitek to give new contracts to very soon, not to mention signing Ortiz long term. Moving Manny will almost certainly free up enough money to help with those offseason chores. Sure, it will hurt not having the most feared hitter in the American league, but you dont win Championships with one person. His team mates are the important thing right now. Its almost like trading Manny for all those players we can resign who are the true nucleus of this team.

If the Yankees don't take him (hopefully they will) then is this move enough to convince Manny to straighten up and fly right? If nobody wants him then his only chance for a title is in Boston. Gee! he could even offer some money back to the team in an effort to keep his buddies around and have a better chance to WIN.

Ok, early I offered technical opinion, now here is my persoanl one - Bad move by the Red Sox. Way to valuable as a hitter and quite frankly, when he is focused, he is a decent left fielder. Most importantly, Manny can be managed! Manny is a kid in a man's body and I do think he responds to a little supervision. Little proved it and so can the next hopefully decent manager they bring in. Perhaps if the Red Sox had a real leader in the clubhouse (Normar, where are you??) this is the best way to reign Manny in.

A big gamble. If it frees up money to go after Guerrero or Colon, I'm all for it. And if New York takes the bait, all the better.
