Pedro Martinez, in comments to the media, Friday declared "enough is enough" and closed the door on contract negotiations with the Sox, saying he will enter free agency after the season. Page 10 The Red Sox should seriously consider trading martinez immediately. His shoulder is obviously fragile and surgery will be required probably as soon as this off season trade him for a big bat at the tail end of the lineup. enough is enough with this clown. dave , lynnfield, ma This scenario could (and should) have been anticipated by management as soon as Schilling was signed. We are all dealing with a fragile/macho ego which was shown to us all in game 7 ALCS last year. Now we have a real 'horse' for the team to ride and the Pedro ego is again bruised. Let management come clean - both Pedro & D-Lowe know they are overpricing themselves - sign Varitek FIRST, then Nomar & Ortiz and then probably take apart the rest of the team who had simultaneous career years in 2003 to see it crash becuase of one man's ego and another's lack of assertiveness when it REALLY mattered!! I hope this isn't too outspoken for you to put on the comment page. Thank you Leonard, Austin Tx Cut pedro now and spare us his belly aching for the remainder of the season. Frankly, at this point, I trust Aroyo with the ball more than petey. Tek, Ortiz, and Lowe should be our priorities, in that order. Pedro and Nomar should take a cue from Trot Nixon and Tom Brady, the two TRUE heros of New England sports. Both recently signed contracts that allow their respective teams the flexibility to be competitive. Neither one has EVER complained publically about their pay. Consider this analogy... in 3 years, the Colts will be crippled because of Mannings HUGE salary. The Patriots however, will still be thriving because Brady didnt demmand anything unresonable, even though he has more of a grounds to do so then Manning did. dirtyfrank, west lafayette IN Trade him to a national league team and eat part of his contract to get the bad attitude away from the rest of the players. He showed us last year that his own interests are ahead of the team. The money saved on not signing him should be used on our other players like Jason and D Lowe. Bill , Berlin, NH Two words Pedro....Pat Tillman. Step back and think about how lucky you are and about your place in society. You are making yourself look like a smal person. Jay , Clarks Summit, PA Pedro, Thank you so much for waking me up! I've been a Red Sox fan for about 29 years and every few years I invest extra time and money on this hobby (shirts, tickets, hats, a jacket, internet radio access, TV access, etc.). My family (and our family time) get swept up in this as I try to indoctrinate my wife and daughter. Why do I do this? I do it because of the romantic notion that it would be great for the team I have been actively routing for since age 12 to finally win it all. Each year part of me actually starts to believe that this is an objective/priority shared by the players as well. Then I read a comment like the one you released this weekend and I realize that I have been the fool once again. Actually, I think that the team was excited about winning, that winning was the priority. However, as your cancerous words splashed over the Red Sox community Saturday, the team likely became embarrassed by their own naivety. As a group, they probably collectively thought "Geez Pedro, thanks a lot. We were almost getting caught up in all the positive karma there for a moment. Winning was THE priority there for a moment. But you reminded us that our multi-million dollar salaries should be the priority. You reminded us that our issues (conflicts) are not with our opponents, they are with our own team. Thanks again for getting our heads straight. We were almost too focused on baseball there for a moment. You got our minds straight. Now, let's play Texas, ah, ah, ah, I mean check our Taxes." -End of Sarcasm- Pedro, the fans don't really want to know about your multi-millionaire problems. Don't you get it? The more we hear you complain about things of this nature (especially in the midst of a season) the less we want to spend our modest extra funds on you. We want to think about you and the other players in terms of baseball greats, not in terms of multi-millionaires. You are ruining the gig for future generations of athletes. As I have aged (now 41) I have found more and more people who have stopped spending time and money as a fan. When I inquire, 90% of these people cite the very type of behavior which you have recently exhibited. You and the other athletic millionaires need to understand that us fans don't really want to hear you say "it's a business." It may be a business to you, but it is not a business to most of us. The more you throw the business side of it in our faces the faster more of us will wake up and stop spending our time and money on you. If none of this sinks in, perhaps this will... Years (decades) from now you will not be remembered for making an extra million or two in 2005 or 2006. What will be remembered will be whether or not you led the team to victory in 2004, 2005, or 2006! I think a lot of the Sox get it, but I think you've got them momentarily confused about what's important, and because of that they are in a quick slump (0-3 vs. Texas and counting). I think most of the Patriots get it, and it shows. I don't think Ty Law gets it anymore. In closing.... DO YOU GET IT??? WELL DO YOU??? Scott , Woodland Hills, CA It is so obvious what the redsox ownership is doing. They want to drastically reduce payroll and add seats to increase profits. As a long time season ticket holder I agree with their philosophy but I ask of management only one thing: keep NOMAR . To watch him play is a supreme pleasure and is really the only reason I go to games. fred, Boca Chica, Dominican Republic Pedro is an incredible prima donna, one of the most selfish athletes in Boston sports history. He cares only about Pedro, as he has made clear by his actions over the years. He has already acted up twice this year and he is a psychological tinderbox waiting to blow sky high. He choked against the Yankees last year. He has never won a World Series Game. His fastball is down 5 to 10 mph. His command is way down, too. He cannot dominate as is in the olden days. He is close to being a washed up bum, one pitch away from going on the disabled for the the fourth time or so. His arm is shot, and it is very apparent. He knows it, too, and that's why he is so concerned about getting signed quickly for next year. Nobody is going to pay huge dollars to a guy with his rubber arm. If he thinks he is going to get 50 million over the next three years, he is deluded. Trade em or dump em, but don't give this selfish athlete one more dime and a new contract. He is pretty much a cancer on this team, and Francona hopefully will show some cahones and stand up ( instead of coddling ) to that self-absorbed narcissitic walking example of what is wrong with today's professional athlete. Much like Quayle was no JFk, neither is Pedro no Koufax, especially in the class department. Koufax always won when it counted!!! And maybe the Globe will show some cahones, too, and print this!!! Todd , Burlington, VT Terrible. This nice guy would not have survived at his home of origin without the mighty USA buck, yet he shows arrogance. Let him go, or any of them. We are now on the skids....I knew it, as a lifelong Red Sox fan, every year it's as bad as the home state leftist politics emenating out of Mass. Spoiled brats with dollars they don't deserve. But, it's all down to the owners, and to think Francona is their boy ! When are they ever going to get a smart manager. He should have gone to his old Phillies, where losing is as much of a habit there as in Boston. Don , Whiting NJ I just want to see the Sox make it back to the World Series. They have a team that can do it this year only if they don't beat themselves. This crap that Pedro pulled comes at a time when they were rolling. Now they have lost 2 in a row and as write this they are down 4-0 in the ninth so you can make it 3. Add the fact that the Yanks have won 6 in a row and this feels like deja vu. Pedro has never thought about the TEAM first but his incredible pitching left him immune to criticism. Now he is looking more human every start so when he runs his mouth he digs a deeper hole. Sick it up for the team Pedro and concentrate on this year.
