Pedro Martinez, in comments to the media, Friday declared "enough is enough" and closed the door on contract negotiations with the Sox, saying he will enter free agency after the season. Page 19 I love Pedro as much as anyone, but at this point, I'm sick and tired of his whining abd bitching. If he had a 5-0 record with a good ERA, maybe it might be a little different story. But 3-2, 4.17 ERA, that aint good enough...stop the whining. He's still a great pitcher who just needs to pitch and pitch well Dawg, Scituate, MA Pedro Pitched his heart out for the Redsox for a handfull of years but let's face it. Baseball is a business and over the last two years he's shown that he grows less and less intimidating and overpowering with each start. Unlike other superstar power pitchers such as Nolan Ryan, Curt Schilling or Roger Clemens who, all maintained their high velocity and intimidation, Martinez is losing his velocity and evolving into a very hittable and not as effective finesse pitcher. He can still win games hitting spots and sneaking in breaking pitches as he has shown but does he still have the skills to dominate a game and win at the ungodly rate of 80 percent he has in the past? I don't think so, and if not then why should the red sox be threatened by his free agency? After all look what happened to Ramon Martinez, the other flamethrowing martinez brother. Much like Pedro he just didn't have the physical makeup to maintain his velocity over a long period of time and subsequently become a very beatable pitcher. mark, Weymouth Let him go. I'am sick and tired of all his garbage. patrick , north billerica he was probably tendered a new contract with a lesser amount than he expected due to his decline and started to whine like last year when he wanted his option picked up.stop your whining and worry about your pitching you wimp. bruce, raynham Pedro is a an insult to hard working schleps who have to shell out the money to see the games and support the team. Being a member of the Red Sox is a dream in itself nevermind the ridiculous salary. Pedro, you might have had it rough at some point in your life but I think you might have forgot that you insult people who are less fortunate than you who support this team and have to spend a good chunk of their savings just to see ONE game with their family. Jeff, Somerville It's amazing how a guy who would be lucky to have a job in his own country can come to the US (and our fair weathered friend of a nation up north), make more in a year than most make in a lifetime, and not keep his trap shut. He's a whimp. Can't wait till Zimmer kicks his scrawny butt! Robert, West Yarmouth Get rid of him. He is clearly not a team player! Steve, Medford pedro martinez is free to speak his mind. the only people who really know what's going on are pedro, his agent and red sox ownership. the fans, the media and even other players can make their own judgments and speak their mind, as pedro is. there's already too much censorship in the media already (the janet jackson and howard stern incidents are good examples) so why should pedro wear a muzzle? if doing negotiations/airing grievances gets him, the team and the fans charged up, then all the better. anyone and everyone needs to look at the bigger picture: getting a world series. it would certainly be nice to keep pedro, varitek, lowe and garciaparra on the red sox, but it's up to both sides to work out those deal. not to write off pedro, but as proposed by www.bostondirtdogs.com and peter gammons, a good fit and replacement if pedro does decide to leave the red sox, could be barry zito. thus eliminating both the need for a new ace and and southpaw at that. red sox nation needs to start thinking more positive. let's not just worry about the yankees. the recent sweep by the rangers should be reason enough that there are many more teams out there this year that are potential spoilers. david, new york, ny My father was a devoted sox fan and thought that Pedro was god's gift to the Bosox. However, this past March 1st, my father died from cancer. Through the whole thing, my father never complained and just kept living his life to the fullest. He definitely had reason to complain but he never did, that's not what my father was about. It is disappointing to hear Pedro "bitch" in the mddle of one of the best starts for the club. Stop making yourself bigger than the game, you owe the game the game doesn't owe you. My father lived his life that way even during a time of great pain and loss.... Pedro you should try it Jersey Sox Fan, NYC Pedro: I guess you don't learn things very well. Maybe it's time for a one-on-one lesson from Coach Bill and the rest of the Patriots front office on how to deal with whiners. And, oh yes, champions as well.
