Pedro prepared to walk?

Pedro Martinez, in comments to the media, Friday declared "enough is enough" and closed the door on contract negotiations with the Sox, saying he will enter free agency after the season.

We asked what you thought of the ace's comments, and Red Sox Nation spoke out in droves. Check out our reader comments.

It's hilarious. If this were the Pedro of '99 there would be reason to be concerned, but he is not and there is not. If he thinks there are many teams who are going to offer him as much money as the Sox - especially given his fragile frame, shaky mental discipline on the mound, and inability to pitch in the cold - then he's crazy. Let him go and spend the money signing Varitek and Lowe.

After 60 years I am very tired of these spoiled egotists who profess great loyalty and love for us rabid Boston Red Sox fans. Pedro has worn out his welcome and like me and the Red Sox Nation we are tired of his child like antics. The team was doing great, Pedro pulls his usual BS and the team loses 3 straight. He tried to screw things up by injecting the other guys contracts into it. Don't tell me it did not have a negative effect on the team. He will destroy team chemistry no matter what spin management puts on it. However, management allowed this to happend after the fiasco with A-Rod made us look like idiots. Steinbrenner I dislike but the difference between him and Sox management is that he is the boss and will spare nothing to produce a winner. The attitude should be play, produce, win or hit the road. Pedro would be long gone if in NY. Shilling is number one and Pedro knows it. I am tired of guys like Pedro and Nomar putting out PR crap that they want to stay in Boston, love Boston but OH don't dishonor me with offering less than 17 Mil. Could it be that Little Pedro may be the one not telling the truth? Pedro and Nomar are phonies. It's all about money and forget loyalty and loving us rabid Boston fans. I say trade them both right now and get something while we can. Let's not go through a Clemens again and end up with nothing to show for it. Get players like Nixon who really do love Boston fans. Sign Ortiz, Tek and Lowe to long term contracts. Especially Tek. And by the way, send that Sox representative "caveman" along with Pedro and Nomar. Joe Sarasota, Fl.

It bothers me that everytime a Sox star says anything that RedSox Nation may not like to hear, people (especially at talk shows) are quick to rip the guy apart. Remember Clemens! Now, the same is happening with Pedro. One should step back and realize that this is nothing more than a step (perhaps a necessary one) in salary negotiations. Management uses all the tools it has to decrease players salaries (remeber Manny on waivers? One of the reasons for the move/ or the effect of the move was a players' salary market correction). So, why can't the players do the same? They could come out and make statements in the press to make the management think twice. It think this is perfectly alright. As for Pedro staying on with the Sox, I hope he does. I think he is still one of the best in the game, and we need to have keep him if we can. If we want to win it all.

Go! You big ,selfish baby!! Who do you think you are?!!!! are we suppose to bow down to you?!! take a hike! jerk!

Something that Pedro may have forgotten is that he is under contract for this year. He is therefore under obligation based on, 17.5 million reasons, to do everything to help his team win the World Series. Anything he does to hurt team chemistry or distract others from their goals is unacceptable. He is the epitomy of the "me first" attitude that detracts from the game. The fact that he is pitching average at best only makes his comments more ludicrous.

Why fans should care about contract talk is beyond me. IT'S NOT YOUR MONEY!!!! It's between ownership and the player. All you should ever care about is how they play between the lines. After that its nothing more than soap opera material. I root for the team every year regardless of the players in uniform. That's what being a fan is. Get over it people.

I really think Pedro wants to stay and is frustrated and that is why he spoke out-out of frustration. As a season ticket holder since 1975 I remember all too well the '80 season when Lynn, Fisk and Burleson (the heart of the team) played their final seasons with the Sox. It was a major distraction. It took years to recover from the loss of those guys. Hopefully history doesn't repeat itself.

your an overpaid underworked child, go get a real job!

I am not even a Red Sox fan but trade the guy if you can. Schilling, Lowe, Wakefield, Kim and whoever they throw in at 5 is still one of the top 3 starting rotations. I think everyone in New England and all over is tired of hearing a man who makes 17+ million a year crying about having to make a living and get respect.

I see this "let's wait to the end of the year" is troubling. The ownership is playing high stakes poker (Luccino is the ring leader), and I see it backfiring. How do we replace 5 stars next year? Will the 2005 Red Sox totally lack team chemistry like the 2004 Yankees?
