Pedro Martinez, in comments to the media, Friday declared "enough is enough" and closed the door on contract negotiations with the Sox, saying he will enter free agency after the season. Page 4 Just when you thought Pedro's act couldn't get more tired. The team is playing great and he picks this time to bitch. From the no respect crap to not speaking with the media I've seen and heard enough. Let's get players that appreciate playing in such a great place and want to be here. That said, for all the things they've done well, the new regime is handling their free agent situations just as poorly as Duquette / Harrington. GBK, New Hartford, CT I wish I could be disrespected with an offer of doing anything for 15 million a year... GREED, thats it, nothing to do with pride, nothing to do with "future generations", plain old GREED Steve, Braintree If Pedro is serious, my sense is that management should stop babying him and pitch him until his arm falls off! Forget the skipped turns and 100 pitch counts. Heck-- let him even pitch in relief. ken, Columbia, Maryland This is why I don't watch the Red Sox any more. I can't believe anybody pays the amount of money they do to attend a professional sports game. There is no loyalty on either side, it's all mercenary. Brian, Wenham Pedro's comments seemed like poor timing coming off of a six game winning streak but I believe he had this planned out. If there had not been any movement on his contract a month into the season then he was going to voice his displeasure. While I don't agree with the timing of this statement and the fact that Pedro dragged his fellow teammates' names into this, I must agree that it is disconcerting that the Red Sox have seemingly done nothing to sign the future free agents. When Trot Nixon signed just before spring training it seemed that we were in for a nice stream of signings. Since then we have heard nothing except that each side would like to work something out. Given the way the Nomar contract talks worked out (you can't negotiate between $15 and $17 mil?) and the way the Sox undercut their previous offer, I can only imagine they're trying to force smaller contracts upon these players and the players aren't biting. It's a dangerous game the Red Sox upper management is playing and it wouldn't surprise me if this type of negotiating comes back to haunt them. I think there is a better way that Pedro could have expressed his feelings, but I also think there is a better way the Red Sox brass can negotiate these contracts. Mike, Frederick, MD He is a whiner .the salaries these guys make and they complain .give me a break. i would play for half what he makes. Bob, Nepean If he really wants to leave, then let him go.I feel he is not worth what he is looking for(probably at least $12 mil. per year)The SOX management is not certain that his arm will hold up.That is why they did not give him a contract already. Jason, Cumberland I AM SICK AND TIRED OF PEDRO. HE WAS GIVEN TWO LEADS IN THE ALCS LAST YEAR AND HE COULD NOT PROTECT EITHER ONE. NOTHING LIKE SEEING PEDRO POINTING TO THE SKY AFTER BLOWING A THREE RUN LEAD. LET HIM AND HIS 85 MPH FASTBALL WALK. JOE, HAWTHORNE, NEW JERSEY Trade him to a cellar dweller and get draft picks or developing talent. If he is going to whine all year and doesn;t want to be on the Sox, get rid of him ASAP. B. R., Austin, Texas Pedro is going about this the wrong way. Ownership showed him that they wanted to win a world series by improving the pitching staff considerably. If he going to bring this to the media, then I say trade him now while you can get something for him. Malcontents are not part of the PATRIOTS and look what they have done. Pedro you have been great, but you have crossed the line, you showed it is all about MONEY.
