The Sox have shipped Nomar to the Cubs in a four-team deal and ended up with shortshop Orlando Cabrera and first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz. Are the Sox better off?

Page 12 Absolutely. It was obvious that they were never going to sign him, and the situation was effecting his play, both in the field and at the plate. In Cabrera, they get a player grateful to be rescued from baseball Siberia, and Mientkiewicz is a needed upgrade at first. I wish Nomar all the best, and hope this revitalizes what had been, before the bitterness and strife, a truly magnificent career. Steve, Tewksbury I know people in Boston me included are going NO WAY NOT NOMAAAAA!! But Theo & Co are looking at the big picture Playoffs and Championships. Haste we rember back when the Pats traded up Miloy and look what the results were. Hang in their gang the "master plan" is now in motion Mike , Plainville, MA *Yawn* Rich, Worcester I am absoulutely astonished. Epsteins rationale is that this improves defense and hence will make Lowe a more effective pitcher? Huh? What an igniminious exit for a great servant to be traded for two at best average players, one of which will probably leave at the end of the season anyway. Would not blame Nomar if he elected to be a Cub in the Hall of Fame. Thanx for the memories Nomar. You deserved much better. Brian, Bolton Uk With Nomar likely gone at the end of the season, the time was right to get something for him. The Sox improved their defense and, hopefully, coming to Fenway will help Cabrera and Mientkiewicz. Bob, Greensboro, NC The way I look at, this seems to be an OK trade.. maybe not from now until season's end... but let's just think of the chances of resigning Nomar (not very good) We at least got a potentially great short stop in Orlando Cabrera, who not to mention, helps Derek Lowe out with his defense.. Doug Mientkiewicz is a great asset to the team's defense as well... Adding Dave Roberts adds rare speed to the Red Sox lineup. All in all, the Cubs did get the better in signing Nosey, but his poor attitude was bad for the clubhouse. Let's just let time tell. Greg, Chicopee Yes it is great for the red sox they get a first baseman and a ok shortshop. Also it makes the red sox and cubs better. cubs get a super shortshop and nomar is happy and out of boston. Stephan, Richmondville,NY No! I would rather have won a World Series with Nomar! This is such a sad day in Boston! This trade totally stinks. Sandy, Canton this is an idiotic trade. the red sox need PITCHING. pitching wins championships. instead they have given up a great shortstop for 2 mediocre, no-power 250 hitters. in a few years they will be gone and it will have been no-mar for no-thing. they should not have traded nomar for anyone but a quality pitcher. tom, boston This is the worst trade in the history of professional sports. Epstein has lost a lot of credibility as a result.
