The Sox have shipped Nomar to the Cubs in a four-team deal and ended up with shortshop Orlando Cabrera and first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz. Are the Sox better off?

Page 14 I believe that the Red Sox , knowing that Nomar was not going to re-sign after this year, and needing to upgrade the team defensively it was a good trade for them. Now they have two gold glove players at first and at shortstop, and did not lose any of their offense. It also will help out the pitching staff with a stronger infield to support them. GO SOX- YANKEES SUCK!!!! Jerry D., Burlington VERY GOOD TRADE.WE FINALLY HAVE SOME DEFENCE AND SPEED TO PLAY BASEBALL WHICH SHOULD HELP THE PITCHING ERA'S ROBERT, BROCKTON,MA. Nomar was seemingly unhappy. There was virtually no way he was going to stay. The Sox definately improved a stagering defense and aquired to guys that they will be able to sign. While this deal might not seem awe inspiring, Theo made a very sensible decision. Go Sox! Jim , Big Rapids,MI I think it was surprise that Nomar got traded. I don't know if these new players will help. I hope it will work out . If not it is going to be a terrible trade. nairn, Randolph,ma Defensively they are a far better club now, offensively, they lose power, but Mientkiewicz hits well for average, and Cabrera is a decent average and power hitter. Cabrera and Dave Roberts both add to their base-stealing threats, but the Sox need to start playing small ball to capitalize on these talents. As far as playoff baseball, they are a better team, but losing Nomar's bat could be trouble. I will miss Nomar, he has always played harder than everyone on the team, and he is the one player over the last decade who you hoped would retire as a Red Sox, and possibly win a world series here. After the Arod debacle it seemed like the rift between the club and the player was too wide and he was unlikely to re-sign with us. I am just glad he gets to play for a club like the Cubs who have diehard fans thirsting for postseason glory. If he can't win one here, maybe he'll help them end their drought. Jeff , Allston In the long run the deal seems somewhat beneficial for the sox, but when people see nomar up to bat in a cubs uniform, its gonna hit home that we gave up one of the best players in the game. The only part that seems off track is that they didn't trade for pitching, an obvious weakness after Schilling and Martinez pitch. John, Quincy I like the trade for the Redsox, but I don't understand why the sox had to include Murton in the deal. Jeez, the Cubs gave up nothing for one of the best players in baseball. j., Altoona The Sox are not better off!! The heart of this team is gone and with the trade of Nomar. . .I would assume other players feel less secure and the team is more divided and lacking the confidence needed to achieve ANY success this season. I feel completely disheartened by the actions of the management. I am a true fan, but I question my future commitment to this team and the decision making process behind the ridiculousness at the end of last season and the trade of Nomar. Nomar...we will miss you. . .all the best. Nancy , Norwood this is absolutely pathetic. we traded a hall of famer for a 265 career hitter at shortstop and a backup first baseman. why!!!?????? jared, san francisco One of the worst trades in the History of Sports. The Sox are getting as dumb as the Celtics. They are most certainly not better off.
