No more Nomar

The Sox have shipped Nomar to the Cubs in a four-team deal and ended up with shortshop Orlando Cabrera and first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz. Are the Sox better off?

Don't worry, Nomah's a Cub now. He'll spend 3 weeks on the DL between now and October, bat .208 the rest of the way, and make a crucial error leading to the Cubs losing a one game playoff for the wild card. Then he'll sign for $10 mil a year with the Angels. AAARGH.......

Outstanding deal. Anytime you can trade a player who weren't going sign in the off-season for other players that address an apparent weakness in your club it is a good deal. I still haven't forgiven Nomar for his poor play last Sept & Oct. That was his opportunity to leave a heritage in Boston and he missed it. He will be missed in the short term but not the long. This team is now on the way to the playoffs with a much better chance to win the whole thing. Great job Theo!

Are the Sox better off? No. Is Theo off his rocker? Probably

The Red Sox have never realized that it is precisely players like Nomar that one should build a team AROUND. Instead, they shuffle the deck one more time, in the hope that this time they'll have a winning hand. But no -- without the intangibles that Nomar brings to the team (never mind the tangibles! ), the Sox will raise, bluff and lose once again. And it serves them right. There is a difference between a good player and a great. It is not a statistical difference, it's not always even a perceptible one. It's just the way they play the game. And I, at least, have no doubt, that Nomar is a *great* player. I can only hope he lands in LA, where I'll be able to root for him from the stands.

Thanks for nothing Theo and the rest of Red Sox management. I think this trade was horrible. The two guys we got are not hitting .250. This is unbelievable!!! I doubt I will watch any further Red Sox games. Thank you Nomar for 7 great years here in Boston. You are truly an inspiration and a great person. Show Chicago how great you are Nomar and Let's go Cubbies!

i cant believe we didnt get clement... this obviously had to come from up top.... no way theo makes this deal and is happy about it henry wanted nomar gone.

I have mixed feelings about this trade, mainly that Nomar should have been traded earlier in the season, if not in the off-season for a Young Gun (like a Hudson or Beckett). However, since Nomar has been essentially useless to us this year coupled with his contract distraction (not to mention his high salary) we now have two players who could actually help this team. Your answer is YES.

Nomar was one of my favorite sox players but this trade was inevitable. Red Sox nation will miss him for sure. One player doesnt not make a championship team and the sox improved their team today. It was better to get something for Nomar than nothing. Hopefully we will see him at Fenway in October

I don't know if the Sox are better off or not, but the citizens of Red Sox Nation are certainly the poorer for the loss of one of the classiest players to ever grace the team.

This is a very good trade for the Red Sox if you're a Cubs fan. I'll say no mar on the subject!
