The Sox have shipped Nomar to the Cubs in a four-team deal and ended up with shortshop Orlando Cabrera and first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz. Are the Sox better off?

Mark , Melrose Horrible trade. Didn't get any pitching help, another first basement who has no stick, and a shortstop who also has no stick. I'm really not sure if the improved defense will offset the loss of offense. I'm very disappointed. Now, if the Sox meet the Cubs in the World Series and it's Nomar who delivers the finishing blow to win the Series, I wonder what curse this is going to be. I'm not sure I'll be as interested watching the Sox now, especially with the ticket prices rising every year. Even the cable costs a lot nowadays. Boomer, Quincy Nomar is a likely Hall of Famer who should have spent his entire career with the Sox. Larry Lucchino and John Henry were playing with fire when they entertained bring on A-Rod and dealing away Nomar. They got burned, and they're still burning. This was only making the best of a bad situation. Let's hope Nomar doesn't hit the winning home run for the Cubs against the Sox in the World Series. Christopher , Fairport, NY I am really going to miss Nomah swinging at every first pitch -- demonstrating all the discipline of a squirrel. He was past his prime, folks...better to get something for him than nothing. Jaxxon , Arlington, VA Good Move. When someone doesn't want to be with you .What do you do.You end the relationship don't you.Maybe the rest of the divas will realize that Theo isn't afraid to end a relationship. Mark , Melrose This HAS to be a good deal for the Sox. I am very disappointed in Nomar. Anyone who "pretends" to "love" the fans, city, et al would have accepted the 4 year $60 million offer that was extended to him during the spring. I always thought he was one of the greatest but I feel that he has left Red Sox Nation down. I don't feel that he EVER had any intention of staying in Boston and was only giving lip service to his loyalty to all of us. Given the situation in which he placed the Sox brass, anything that they could have gotten at this time has to be a good deal for them. We certainly needed to upgrade our defense and Cabrera and Doug will surely do that. Thanks for letting me vent! I have gotten tired of the pouting appearance that Nomar has been giving in recent NESN telecasts. Bob , Huntingdon, PA This is a stupid deal. The Red Sox loose a leader and an all-star for nothing. Chemistry is the key to any team's success and Nomar was part of the glue to keep the Sox together during all of the idiotic moves by management and ownership over the past 7 years. The Cubs will end up beating the Sox to the punch of getting a World Series title first. Who knows, maybe Boston will have a parade for Nomar like we did for Ray Borque? My seven year old son Ben, like all the other kids in New England, has learned a tough lesson about loyalty and class and has lost a true local hero. Bill, Sharon, MA it is rare today that a player plays as many years with one team as nomar did with boston. he grew up in the system. in that time, he became the heart of this team - a great player, with a great attitude, and great in the community. he cared about boston and boston cared about him. even when the sox tried to trade him for a-rod without even telling him, he maintained his desire to stay in boston. he is a stand up guy and handled with grace a public situation that must have been devastating. now we trade the heart of the team for two mediocre guys? all i have to say is that it's sad to see him go. from what i knew, he is an all around great guy. i don't think anyone can dispute that. and i'd rather take my chances with a great guy coming back and hitting in the .320's than two guys i could care less about both hitting in the .240's. peter , narragansett, RI well at least i am still the best ss in red sox history. it's about leadership "nomar", oh yeah, clutch hitting doesn't hurt either. joe , cooperstown, ny The outrage from the earlier responses is insane. Nomar no longer wanted to play for the Boston organization (sans the fans) and rightly or wrongly, let those personal feelings affect his relationship with teammates and the media. Boston mgmt erred by taking the A-Rod pursuit public and bears responsibility for some of the fallout. Bottom line: This was going to end with Nomar somewhere else at the end of 2004 anyway - why not look at Cabrera as a potential replacement and at a cheaper price in the interim? Looks like I am going to have re-name our 5-year old cat now......
