The Sox have shipped Nomar to the Cubs in a four-team deal and ended up with shortshop Orlando Cabrera and first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz. Are the Sox better off?

Page 54 being a yankee fan, i couldnt be happier.. theo epstein.. lets see. jeff suppan, nice pick. scott sauerbeck. another winner. scott williamson. strike three.. trading nomar for junk.. priceless.. get rid of theo..or it may be another 100 years before you even make the playoffs. by the way. contreras for loiaza.. what a awesome move.. jeff, freetown ma The Babe Ruth of our time. Thats all there is to say. Adam, Hyde Park I think it was a great trade. It was obvious that Nomar didn't want to be in Boston anymore. They got two players who should solidify the team defense which has been horrendous. Now, Theo can concentrate on resigning Pedro and most importantly, Jason Varitek. Walt, Lawrenceville, Ga. What a very stupid team those Red Sox are. Dog, Boston This is the worst trade in Red Sox history. The face of Red Sox Nation and a guy who truly wanted to win it all for the fans of Boston was shipped off like a piece of meat. He has so many good years ahead of him. He's probably got 2 or 3 batting titles left in him if he stays healthy. I feel betrayed and ashamed to be a Red Sox fan today. As a lifelong fan I never thought I'd say this, but I think I'm pulling for the Cubs this year. ... And you know what all the know-it-all writers and talk radio people are overlooking?? PEDRO IS GOING TO BE A YANKEE NEXT YEAR. Like it or not, the man has absolutely NO passion for Boston or loyalty to its fans. Kind George can always offer more than the BoSox and Pedro is going to chace the money. Instead of realizing this and using their money to resign Nomah... we're going to be without both of them next year. Smart move Theo. Phil, Indianapolis I love Nomar, a lot of people do. But it was obvious he doesn't want to play here. So he and the Red Sox need to move on. JD, Norwood Considering Nomar's attitude this season it was a good move. I am a big proponent of team chemistry and I think that taking his infectious attitude out of the clubhouse makes the team better. Cabrera and Mankiewicz are great defensive players and are better hitters than their number this season. Winning in the playoffs (if we get there) is all about pitching, defense and timely hitting. That said, Theo and the Trio gave Nomar NO respect and the media tried to run him out of town. When you have the second best SS in the game, you sign him to a long term deal and not try to trade for the best SS in the game. This is not a fantasy team theo, but he did improve the team for this year given the circumstances Al, Needham FIrst the idoits traded Babe and now they traded Nomar maybe at tonights game against the Twins Jason Varitek and Henry Blanco will have a tea party in center field because since Nomar's gone they really have no chance they might as well give up! Amanda, Hollywood No way !!! I never ever wanted to see Nomar in any uniform except a Red Sox uniform. He should have been a career Sox player even in a time when there aren't career" players anymore. Why the Sox EVER thought to trade him last winter was beyond me - - how can you think of trading NOMAR? after that the writing was on the wall, but i will truly truly miss him, he was a great player. Maura, Seymour Imagine this scenario (if trade didn't happen) - Sox face Yanks in ALCS, make it to another Game 7, hold 1 run lead in 8th inning, Nomar and Millar (at 1st base) make critical errors, Yanks take lead and win game, Nomar signs with Dodgers in off-season. If this or something like it were to happen, Theo would be crucified for not having shored up the defense and for having gotten nothing for what everyone knew was a lame duck shortstop. For this potentiality alone, Theo did what he had to do with this trade, the fans emotional reaction notwithstanding.
