The Sox have shipped Nomar to the Cubs in a four-team deal and ended up with shortshop Orlando Cabrera and first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz. Are the Sox better off?

Page 55 This was AWESOME. Cabrera is great and will fit right in. Chris, Allston.MA I think it's a good trade. Nomar had ONE good season. That was when he was a ballplayer with heart. This was before SNL, commercials, endorsements and all that "second coming of Ted Willaims" talk. He started to believe his own press and acted like a rock star wherever he went. He wasn't very close to anyone on the team and hasn't been a team player for sometime. Good move Theo. I'm still a Sox fan that believes! Joel, New York (formally of South Boston) Look at Cabrera's numbers over the last 3 years. They're pretty good. They certainly aren't Nomar's numbers, but his defense is better than Nomars and thats why they got him. He's been playing fro a team that no one watches. Put him on a new team and we may very well see a much better player. Mientkiewicz's numbers the last 3 years are pretty good as well. He isn't a power hitter, but he is a good line drive hitter. He has been struggling with a wrist injury. And the main reason they got him was because of his glove. An excellent fielding first baseman makes everyone in the infield better. Thats what the Sox are looking for. Their offense scored plenty of runs when Nomar was out. They will continue to score runs without him again. They needed to shore up their defense and thats what they did. So I don't think this is a terrible deal. I was very disappointed that they didn't get a starting pitcher like Clement. I also don't like that they had to throw Murton in as well. I don't think they got full value for those two. Jerry, Rockland This deal is whack!!! How are my Sox gonna go and trade a fan favorite, and star player like that right out of the blue!!! I am very disappointed in the decision of the Red Sox brass. I've been a Sox fan all my life, and I really want to win the Series, and I'm sure the brass does to, and this deal is meant in the best interest of the team, but Nomar!!!! Come on!!!! Colin, Charlotte, NC I am 8 years old and I don't think the Red Sox owners get it..they don't see the Red Sox the way a kid does. Your broke our hearts. I want to win, but not without Nomar. It will be like Christmas without Santa Claus. Tommy, Fairfield People who are saying how awful this trade is obviously don't realize that Nomar was leaving at the end of the season regardless of what happened this year. Theo made a creative deal that gets the Sox a very good defensive shortstop for the rest of the season and a HUGE upgrade at first base in Mientkiewicz. This makes them a better team and gets rid of all the lingering doubt about Nomar's future with the team. Caleb, Brookline The Red Sox handled the entire A-Rod / Nomar fiasco as poor as could be expected from a so called professional franchise. I can't blame him for feeling the way he did. He was a true ball player and more importantly human being, and the Red Sox organization blew it here. They received marginal players at best in return for him. Strike one Theo. Be careful, you may be the next one out of a job. The team WILL NOT make the playoffs this year. Brian, Fairhaven Who cares....When do the Patriots Kickoff ??? Steve, Medford This flat out stinks. Our lineup went from fearsome to loathsome. lance, albany This deal was terrible. Maybe mandatory drug testing should be extended to general managers too! What was Theo thinking?
