The Sox have shipped Nomar to the Cubs in a four-team deal and ended up with shortshop Orlando Cabrera and first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz. Are the Sox better off?

Page 56 I think this will turn out to be a very good trade. Let's face it Red Sox nation - we were not going to be able to resign him after the season. We bashed the Sox in the past for getting nothing for Vaughn and Roger. This ownership team has the foresight to get what they could for him. What they got was two gold glovers that we significantly improve their defense. Sure, there is an argument to be made that they will lose some offense. My response to that is: How much offense did the Sox get from Nomar last September and October, and they did well. He has been nothing short of a baby since the A-Rod trade talks. In addition to the players the Sox got, they got rid of a distraction. Nomar, thanks for all the memories it was fun to watch you play from 1996 through July of last season. I wonder how his Achilles will be feeling now! P., Kingston I hate to see Nomar go, he has been a great player for a very long time. I do think that he needs to accept alot of the responsibilty that got him to this day..he has never really been clear about finishing up in Boston..I really regret that he will not be around when we finally win this thing Kevin , Plattsburgh NY A feeling of sickness is in my stomach, i've had a few hours to take in this trade and i don't like it one bit. Cabrera and Mientikiewicz are having the worst seasons of their careers and the Sox trade for them and give up the greatest SS we've ever had. Nomar is still getting over the injury that sidelined him the beginning of the first half. A World Series if it is to be this year will not be the same without seeing Nomar hoist the trophy, cause he embodied everything about the Red Sox and the team they are. He was a player who busted his butt for everything he ever got, was treated improperly by management and even by us the fans sometimes, the Sox are now a much different team now. I would have definately favored keeping Nomar if we couldn't get Johnson for him and then sending Lowe off to Philly for Millwood or off to The White Sox for Loazia who the Yankees got. BTW why didn't Theo Epstein demand Matt Clement for Nomar instead of taking Cabrera, who has never played in a big game in his life and Mientkiewicz who a few years ago was looked at as nothing but failed potential. Who knows, we got so close to Red Sox-Cubs last year, maybe this is the year and maybe the Sox management will be forced to see up-close how big of a mistake they made when Nomar hits.400 in the playoffs. Joey We all knew Nomar was going to go. We picked up some speed and we got better defensively. Way to go, Theo. 1918 NO MORE! James , Providence Gee I wonder if Nomar had more value at the start of the season?? Not to swift Theo. tom, hingham I feel like a piece of my heart has been cut out!!! Have beena fan for 40 yrs. and never have felt more ashamed of this organization as I am now! Nomar has been there hit man for monthe now, how do they know for sure what would have happened at the end of the season. tricia, bourne Nomar is past his prime. C'ya Nomar!! I've read so many messages where people say "he embodies everything Red Sox baseball is all about". So basically, what you're saying is that this guy is a loser like the rest of the team! When was the last time they've won a world series? Where was the great Nomar? Get a life and move on. He'll make his millions. PS GOOOOOOOO YANKEEEEEEES!!! Yankees rule, boston I think that Nomar is a Fenway hitter with poor self control. He has always had big league talent--but he has not developed himself and has poor fundamentals as both a fielder and a hitter. Like Mo Vaughn, another very talented player, he is increasingly one dimensional--and he can only do it at Fenway. I think this was a good move for this year--and even better for next year. I want to see players who work hard and make themsevles better. Nomar isn't that player, though he plays HARD and has marvelous talent. Perhaps he will learn something and make himsself better somewhere else--like Roger did. Richard , hingham The Sox curse has nothing to do with Babe Ruth. Sad to lose Nomar!!!!! pat, Newburyport Yeah, its a great deal, the Yankess will win the pennant for sure.....
