The Sox have shipped Nomar to the Cubs in a four-team deal and ended up with shortshop Orlando Cabrera and first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz. Are the Sox better off?

Page 63 Nomar was amazing to watch, when he wasn't hurt. It's been frustrating the past few years because he seems to be getting fragile with age, and he has many years in front of him. I would have liked to have seen a good prospect or two in return, but I will be watching the rest of the year with great anticipation. I've taken a brief break from the War here in Afghanistan to express my displeasure. Nomar IS the Red Sox. Last year I bought my 4 year old son a Nomar T-shirt thinking Nomar was untouchable and would retire in Boston. I'm completely dismayed.... Noel , Los Angeles, CA Nomar was through with the Sox. He refused to play on the turf in Minn. and he stated to management on Friday that he wanted to go back on the DL. This is the reason why we had to get rid of Nomar. He's thrown in the towel. Since the A-Rod fiasco, he's stretched a two week injury into two months and he's remained uninvolved in the clubhouse and dugout (i.e. Game 1 of the last Yankees series). Sox management had to make the most out of a bad situation. At least our defense is better. Ken, Canton Yes. Obviously on paper you are trading a .320 hitter for two guys that are currently batting .245, but Nomar was no longer giving the team the intangibles. He was not happy in Boston (was not before the A-Rod thing either). It is unfortunate because he use to embody all that was good about the BoSox. That is no longer. He is not popular amongst the teamates and shows little spark on the field. The two new guys would kill to be in Boston, and Nomar would have killed to leave. There was more going on behind the scenes and I do not believe that he would have been signed in the offseason. It is great that we got a couple of players that will want to play and probably not take 57 games to come back from minor injury and they will certainly not mope on the bench during the next series against the empire. Nomar. one of the best Sox player of our generation. no arguments there, but he was gone after this year. He turned down $15 MILLION a year for 4 years. umm $15 MILLION. His feelings and attitude combined with the relentless media speculation made it an almost impossible situation to repair. He was going to leave. So instead of a draft pick we got: Orlando Cabrera, a future all star, who is currently stuck in the mud up north in Montreal... no wait San Juan. he is desperatly needing a change of environment. The guy is gold glove material that together with Pokey can possible become one of the best double play combo's.we've seen in a while. Doug Mientscheivxithxstsssss (sp?) Gold glove first baseman, no questions there, has put up decent numbers at 1st.. he is no Thome, or Delgado, but another example of maybe needing a change of scenery to spark the bat. time will tell on him. Roberts.. don't know much about him besides that he appears to be good at getting on base and stealing bases, solid late inning outfield replacement for any of the 3 positions. Still hard to imagine seeing SportsCenter tomorrow night seeing Nomar in a Cub's uniform but as far as "smart moves" to ensure our Red Sox have the best chance of winning on a yearly basis, this was an excellent move.
