No more Nomar

The Sox have shipped Nomar to the Cubs in a four-team deal and ended up with shortshop Orlando Cabrera and first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz. Are the Sox better off?

You don't trade a cornerstone player--even in these days of free agency; fans must have some consistency through the years--otherwise, we are rooting for LAUNDRY!

Bob, Quincy

This deal is a horrible one. They should have done everything in their power to keep one of the premier shortstops in baseball history, including giving him a deal to make him, not only the highest paid player on the Red Sox, but amongst the highest paid players in baseball. Blame Manny!

Nomar , New Bedofrd, MA

This is the equivilent of trading Larry Bird. Would you have traded Larry Bird in the 80s under any circumstances, even if you thought he might not re-sign? What if it was the last year of his contract and you knew he was headed for retirement? It wouldn't even be considered. Nomar was a franchise player and this trade today was a stake through the heart of Red Sox nation. I would rather have had Nomar play with us for the rest of the year than have the two guys they picked up. We're going to lose them at the end of the year to free agency any way. It was not a guarantee that Nomar was going to walk but even if he did, I wouldn't be as upset with the Red Sox front office as I am now. People said we should deal Nomar so we wouldn't lose him for nothing. Guess what? We not only lost Nomar, we lost a prospect and paid these teams money to get this deal done. There was obviously very little thought put into this trade.

Francis, Hollis, NH

Well, on the one hand, the Sox haven't played a huge amount better with Nomar then they did without him, and this will help the defense. On the other hand - if you trade a future hall of famer and get two guys who... well, aren't... WHAT THE HECK WAS THEO THINKING????? I mean - neither the twins nor the Expos had a suitor for these guys, and the Sox are giving up the best position player they have *ever* developed for these two?????? Man..

I feel bad for Nomar, imagine if he won the world series with the sox and then the cubs. I wish. Well, now Nomah will never win the series and unfortunately neither will Theo but it serves him right. I thought he WAS doing a good job. Now Varitek is my favorite player. Oh and how fitting is it that the first error without Nomah is at shortstop. Thanks Theo you moron.

i feel this move had to be made he was leaving at the end of the year to ca at least in the long run we get something back we needed to get some help on defense with the 3 additons it will help and help in the speed area also

IF NOMAR REALLY WANTS TO PLAY HERE,HE HAS ANOTHER CHANCE IN THE OFF SEASON--REMEMBER,HE IS A FREE AGENT,AND STRANGER THINGS HAVE HAPPENED--BOTH SIDES NEED TO KNOW HOW IMPORTANT HE WAS TO ALL OF RED SOX NATION......

PAUL , BRADENTON,FL.

Hey - they offered him a contract last year for $ 14 Million per year for 3 years and he turned it down. These players have to realize that they are not entitled to what they want. They are players for Management and need to fall in line! Nomar is not even the tenth best shortstop in the game. He will be lucky to get $8 Million per year next year.

Jim, Boston

Remember the Wade Boggs Trade?? This reminds me a little of that. This guy will be guaranteed to come back and bite our butt some time, and I think he will have a very long sucessfull carreer elsewhere. This trade is just plain stupid but so predictable. The management faces of the red sox may be younger but they still make the same old mistakes.

It was a desperate move. In the near term, it appears to be the right move, but Nomar has been mistreated by the Red Sox and is arguably one of the best hitters to play the game. Sorry to see him leave when the going got tough, but he turned down $60M and 48M offers by the Sox so he left us little choice.
