So things are going pretty well for running back Ray Rice at Baltimore Ravens training camp so far. Just ask them.

In the lead story on the team’s website headlined, “Ravens Fans Give Ray Rice Standing Ovation,’’ staff writer Ryan Mink describes an “emotional’’ Rice making his first public appearance since the NFL handed Rice a two-game suspension for allegedly assaulting his fiancee in February. Rice can be seen on video dragging her unconscious body through the elevator door.
Ravens.com treated Rice’s return to the field as an ascension (look how much he’s gone through!), capturing the scene as fans gave Rice a standing ovation as he ran out to practice.
“I have on number 27 to show the fans, and the world, that I am supportive of Ray Rice,’’ said Jerra Byrd of Randallstown, Md. “He has been forgiven by his wife. He is moving on with his life. He didn’t ask for the two-game suspension.’’
“I’m wearing his jersey because he is still a good man,’’ added Debbie Lindling of Baltimore. “I’m happy to support Ray Rice, just like he has always supported our community.’’
You can’t blame fans for showing enthusiasm for their favorite player, but maybe the team’s PR machine could tone it down a little bit? Otherwise it looks like you’re rushing to get past this pesky domestic violence thing because football is about to start.
