Jim Joyce, Don Denkinger feels your pain. Denkinger was the umpire during Game 6 of the 1985 World Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Royals. The Royals were facing elimination, down 3-2 in the series. In the ninth inning, with the Cardinals leading 1-0, the Royals were down to their final three outs. Jorge Orta led off with a routine grounder off pitcher Todd Worrell to first baseman Jack Clark. Clark flipped it to Worrell, who tagged the base seemingly ahead of Orta crossing. Denkinger called him safe. On-deck was Steve Balboni, who singled, putting runners on first and second with no one out. Orta was eventually forced out at third. However, a couple batters later, pinch-hitter Dane Iorg singled to right to score two runs, giving Kansas City the win and new life in the series.
