Ed Hochuli committed an officiating error that he knew right away was wrong. Unfortunately, due to NFL instant replay rules, there was no way for it to be reversed. It occurred late in a Denver Broncos/San Diego Chargers game late in 2008. Denver had the ball at San Diego's 1-yard-line. Quarterback Jay Cutler (inset photo) dropped back to pass and the ball slipped out of his hands, bounced on the grass and was caught by Chargers linebacker Tim Dobbins. Charger fans couldn't celebrate yet, because even though replays clearly showed it was a fumble, Hochuli ruled it an incomplete pass. The ball was spotted at the 10-yard-line, where the ball hit the ground, since rules did not permit a change of possession after a whistle was blown. A furious Chargers coach Norv Turner would not take consolation that Hochuli apologized to him after the play. Denver scored a touchdown two plays later and then a two-point-conversion to win the game.
