The Islanders suspended veteran defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky Friday for failing to report for the start of the season. Visnovsky has been playing in Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League but is required to return with the lockout over. The KHL is complying with an agreement with the NHL and won’t let him play since the lockout has ended. The Islanders also claimed former BU defenseman Brian Strait off waivers from Pittsburgh . . . The Canucks re-signed defenseman Alex Edler to a six-year deal. He was set to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer . . . The Blues signed defenseman Wade Redden to a one-year, $800,000 deal. He was waived this week by the Rangers, who bought out the final two years of his contract . . . The Panthers signed right wing Alex Kovalev, 39, to a one-year contract . . . The Capitals recalled ex-BU defenseman Tom Poti, who hasn’t played in the NHL in two years because of injuries, from Hershey of the AHL . . . The Kings agreed to contract extensions with coach Darryl Sutter, general manager Dean Lombardi, and president of business operations Luc Robitaille . . . The Flames signed center Steve Begin to a one-year, two-way deal worth $525,000. The 34-year-old ex-Bruin sat out last season with a hip injury . . . The Sharks signed forward James Sheppard and ex-BC defenseman Nick Petrecki to one-year contracts.

Judge in hot water over Manziel ticket

Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel recently got a speeding ticket near Dallas and a local judge, W. Lee Johnson, posted about it on Facebook. Ennis City Manager Steve Howerton issued a news release saying the post was ‘‘insensitive and inappropriate.’’ He said Johnson could face disciplinary action, despite not mentioning Manziel by name . . . Delaware hired Rutgers offensive coordinator Dave Brock as its new football coach . . . California defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast was named to the same position at Southern Cal, replacing coach Lane Kiffin’s father, Monte, who resigned in late November . . . Florida football coach Will Muschamp suspended offensive lineman Jessamen Dunker indefinitely after his arrest for allegedly stealing a scooter . . . With Boise State and San Diego State deciding to stay in the Mountain West Conference, the Big East scrapped plans to split into two divisions and released a revised 2013 football schedule that will have each of its 10 teams playing eight conference games.

Dominguez fractures skull in spill

Jockey Ramon Dominguez, the nation’s leading rider, suffered a fractured skull after a spill during the seventh race at Aqueduct Racetrack. His agent, Steve Rushing, said Dominguez’s wife, Sharon, told him a CT scan revealed the fracture. Rushing says he’s been told the next ‘‘24 to 48 hours can be critical.’’ . . . 2010 Olympic champion Evan Lysacek withdrew from the US Figure Skating Championships, which begin Jan. 25 in Omaha, because of a slow recovery from hernia surgery . . . Swimmers Nathan Adrian and Missy Franklin each won gold in the 100-meter freestyle at the Austin Grand Prix in Texas . . .
