Sixers’ Bynum may be done for season
Out all season with bad knees, Andrew Bynum’s latest setback may be the one that finally ends his year. Bynum acknowledged Friday for the first time that he may not play for the Philadelphia 76ers because of swelling in his right knee. Bynum experienced swelling in his right knee after five-on-five drills last week . . . The NBA received an official offer from 24 Hour Fitness founder Mark Mastrov and billionaire Ron Burkle to buy the Sacramento Kings and keep the team from moving to Seattle, the NBA announced. The Board of Governors is expected to vote by mid-April on the Seattle bid . . . Pamela Smith of Atlanta filed a lawsuit saying basketball Hall of Famer and Charlotte Bobcats owner Michael Jordan is the father of her teenage son.
Saint Mary’s basketball gets 4 years
The NCAA put Saint Mary’s on four years of probation for a ‘‘failure to monitor its men’s basketball program,’’ reducing scholarships and placing other penalties on the team after the governing body said the tiny Catholic college committed several recruiting violations. The NCAA found that coach Randy Bennett ‘‘failed to promote an atmosphere for compliance,’’ particularly over the recruiting practices of a former assistant . . . D’Angelo Harrison, the third-leading scorer in the Big East Conference (17.8 points per game), was suspended by St. John’s for the rest of the season. No reason was given for the suspension, which includes postseason games . . . The University of Massachusetts will open its second season in the Football Bowl Subdivision with a trip to Big Ten power Wisconsin on Aug. 31. The Minutemen will play Maine in its home opener Sept. 7 at Gillette Stadium . . . Former University of Montana quarterback Jordan Johnson, 20, was acquitted in a rape trial that has played out amid NCAA and federal investigations into how the city of Missoula and the school respond to rape allegations on campus.
MISCELLANY Berdych ousts Federer in Dubai semis
Tomas Berdych saved three match points before upsetting defending champion Roger Federer, 3-6, 7-6 (10-8), 6-4, to earn a spot in the final of the Dubai Championships against Novak Djokovic. Top-ranked Djokovic rallied past Juan Martin del Potro, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), in the other semifinal . . . Top-seeded Venus Williams was upset by Olga Puchkova, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, in the semifinals of the Brazil Tennis Cup in Florianopolis . . . Mark Martin will be on the pole at Phoenix International Raceway for the second straight year after becoming the second-oldest pole-sitter in NASCAR history. Martin turned 54 in January, leaving him a few months short of beating Harry Gant as the oldest driver to win a Sprint Cup pole . . . US Speedskating began an investigation into the report of a female skater accusing former Olympian and organization president Andy Gabel of sexual abuse in the 1990s. Bridie Farrell said she had sexual contact with Gabel repeatedly over several months in 1997 and 1998. When the alleged abuse began, she was 15 and Gabel was 33.
