Trailing by 9 1/2 games in the AL East and down by a 3-0 score in the third inning, Sox starter Bronson Arroyo hit the Yankees' Alex Rodriguez in the arm. Rodriguez hollered at the skinny righthander, prompting Varitek to step between them. A-Rod offered some choice words of advice, the catcher countered by giving the Yankees superstar a closeup of his catcher's mitt, and the brawl was on. The Red Sox rallied for an 11-10 victory when Bill Mueller smacked a walkoff homer off Yankees closer Mariano Rivera. While the victory is considered the turning point in the season, it actually wasn't -- the Sox went 5-5 over their next 10 games. But it was a sign that the Sox weren't going to take it anymore, and the image epitomized how the 2004 season played out.
