Rutto enjoys a hot time in Chicago

names

The marathon distance obviously agrees with Evans Rutto. The Kenyan has run in three marathons and has won all three. Yesterday he won his second straight Chicago Marathon in 2 hours 6 minutes 16 seconds. It was the second-fastest time in the world this year. Countryman Daniel Njenga was second, 1:28 behind. Constantina Tomescu-Dita of Romania blistered the rest of the women's field, winning her first major marathon in 2:23:45 despite spending the last few days in bed with the flu. Rutto and Tomescu-Dita won $125,000 each . . . Ethiopia's Eshetu Bekele won the Beirut International Marathon, leading a 1-2-3 African sweep. Bekele finished in 2:17:37, 23 seconds ahead of Kenya's David Kuino. Ethiopia's Fikadi Degetu was third in 2:19:16 . . . Ravens cornerback Chris McAlister signed a seven-year contract that will enable Baltimore to keep the Pro Bowl player through 2010 and allow him to shed his unwanted tag as the team's franchise player. McAlister has been the team's franchise player for two straight seasons. He made no secret of his displeasure over the designation, and sat out most of training camp this summer as a protest -- even though he was assured of making $7.1 million this year . . . David Beckham could be sidelined up to six weeks after cracking a rib during England's 2-0 World Cup soccer qualifying victory over Wales in which he scored a goal Saturday but also drew a suspension for the next game after receiving his second yellow card of the qualifying tournament. The England captain will return to Real Madrid, his Spanish league club, rather than accompany the national team to Wednesday's qualifier in Azerbaijan.

World record for Maine's Crocker

Ian Crocker set a world record in the 50-meter butterfly in the Short Course World Championships at Indianapolis. The 22-year-old from Portland, Maine, touched first in 22.71 seconds, breaking the mark of 22.74 set by Geoff Huegill of Australia in the 2002 championships in Berlin. Crocker won the silver medal in the 100 fly at the Olympics in Athens along with a gold in the 400 medley relay and a bronze in the 400 free relay . . . Lindsay Davenport won the Porsche Grand Prix at Filderstadt, Germany, when top-ranked Amelie Mauresmo quit after losing the first set because of an injured left thigh. Davenport captured the No. 1 vs. No. 2 tennis showdown for her tour-high seventh title of the year and 45th of her career. Mauresmo will undergo tests to see if she can play in next week's Kremlin Cup. If she can't. Davenport needs to win just one match to gain the top spot . . . Jiri Novak, who upset top-seeded Lleyton Hewitt in the semifinals, settled his game after a rocky start and beat Taylor Dent, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3, to win the Japan Open in Tokyo . . . Cindy Parlow scored two goals, and Mia Hamm added a goal and an assist as the US women's national soccer team routed Zealand, 6-0, in Cincinnati . . . Tabor Academy point guard Colby Santos has verbally committed to James Madison.
