Ellen Leahy of Hanson will be inducted into the Westfield State College Athletics Hall of Fame for her basketball success.
Leahy, formerly Ellen Carey , is a native of Weymouth and graduated from Archbishop Williams High School.
She played three seasons with Westfield until 1992. She set 24 school records and led the team to two Massachusetts State Conference titles. She was the conference's coplayer of the year as a senior and a three-time all-conference selection.
Among the records she continues to hold are scoring average (18.9 per game), free throws made (455), and rebounds (869).
Leahy now works part time at the South Shore Education Collaborative as a behavior consultant in special education. She lives in Hanson with her husband, Kevin, and their four children.
She will be among six to be inducted. There are 81 members in the hall and this will be the 11th ceremony for Westfield.
She will join five former athletes and one administrator. The class will include Richard Pierce, who was the school's athletic trainer from 1977 to 2006. Athletes include Claudine Poplawksi , Lance Campbell , and Tim Peters for track and field, and Mike Dorunda for soccer.
Fall practice sessions begin next week
The start of the high school sports season is around the corner. Fall practice for Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association sports, including football, volleyball, and field hockey, can begin Aug. 24.Golf aids research for breast cancer
The Great Island at Pinehills Breast Cancer Golf Tournament to raise money for breast cancer research and treatment will be Aug. 26 at Southers Marsh Golf Club in Plymouth. The tournament is in its third year and has raised more than $39,000 for the Women's Cancer Program. The event is part of Jimmy Fund Golf and one of five that raises money for women's cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Berluti boosts Trinity crew
Ali Berluti of Westwood was a part of the Trinity College crew team's third-place finish in the Division III National Championship Regatta. She joined seven other freshmen on the varsity crew team.Trinity ended its season in second place in the New England Championship and the New England Small College Athletic Conference Championships as well as fourth in the Eastern College Athletic Conference National Invitational Regatta.
Milton Legion squad heads to nationals
The Milton Post 114 is going to the American Legion World Series. The team proved to be best in the state, best in the region, and now will continue on to the national tournament that begins tomorrow in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Milton defeated Cumberland Post 14, a team out of Rhode Island, 15-14, in 10 innings Monday to win the Northeast Regional Championship held in Brockton. The double-elimination tournament featured eight teams.
Eight regions will be represented in the national tournament that ends Tuesday .
