There's no denying there's a lot of noise emanating from The Heights these days, and most of it is coming from the football team.
But there's noise being made by the Boston College field hockey and men's and women's soccer teams.
The No. 6 field hockey team ( 14-4 -0, 2-2-0, Atlantic Coast Conference), which had its highest ranking ever (fourth) earlier in the season, has one game left (Sunday at home vs. Wake Forest), then it is headed to Chapel Hill, N.C., Thursday for the ACC tournament. Senior captain Lauren Parks was named to the Division 1 Senior All-Star team, and will play with the North Team Nov. 18. In 16 games this season, Parks has a career-high 12 points, with five goals and two assists.
Women's soccer coach Alison Foley unabashedly calls her squad "the best BC team we've had." The No. 14 Eagles are 10-5-2, 4-3-2.
A big surprise came this week when freshman Gina DiMartino was named ACC Player of the Week. DiMartino scored the winning goal against No. 12 Virginia last Friday night, then had a goal and an assist in BC's 3-3 double-overtime tie Sunday with Virginia Tech.
DiMartino is leading the ACC in points with 29 (13 goals, 3 assists).
"She was touted as one of the 25 best recruits in the country, and I'd say her actions certainly back that up," said Foley of the 5-foot-4-inch DiMartino, who plays on the national Under-17 team. "We call her the little fox in the box."
Another scoring threat is Charlie Davies on the men's soccer team, although he was held scoreless in last night's 3-1 loss to North Carolina. Davies leads the country in points per game (averaging 2.4). Davies scored on a penalty shot in a 1-0 win over Dartmouth Oct. 18. The Eagles (8-6- -2, 3-3 -2) played to a 1-1 tie with Clemson Saturday. BC outshot Clemson, 27-4. Davies, who has six winning goals, is from Manchester, N.H., but went to the Brooks School in North Andover.
Streaking Bears
The Brown women's soccer team (9-3-3, 3-1-1 Ivy League) is 5-0-1 in its last six games and has outscored opponents, 16-5, over that span. The Bears defeated Cornell, 4-1, Sunday, as senior leading scorer Kathryn Moos extended her scoring streak to five games. Moos has 33 points to lead the Ivy League in scoring. Moos, who also is on the Brown women's ice hockey team, has moved into the school's top-10 career list in several categories, including fourth in goals (30) and seventh in points (73) . . . The Northeastern men's soccer team (7-9-2, 5-4-1 Colonial Athletic Association) has won five straight conference games, and can clinch a playoff spot with a win against Hofstra tonight . . . In Division 3 women's soccer, Wheaton finished its regular season in style Tuesday. Seven scorers led the ninth-ranked Lyons (18-1, 9-0 NEWMAC) to an 8-0 win over Mount Holyoke. Wheaton has won 15 straight games and has the second-longest conference unbeaten streak in NCAA history (73 games). The top-seeded Lyons play No. 8 seed WPI in the NEWMAC playoffs tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Wheaton's Mirrione Stadium.Susan Bickelhaupt can be reached at bickelhaupt@globe.com ![]()
