Kate Sheridan of Hingham is off to a fine start for the Colby College women's lacrosse team. In the second game of the season, a 17-10 victory over Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, the sophomore midfielder scored four goals.
"She has a knack for scoring," said her coach, Heidi Godomsky. "But it will be a little more difficult for her this year. Last year nobody knew her. Now everybody is looking out for her. It will be interesting to see how she adapts."
As a freshman, Sheridan led the Mules in goals with 46, and was second in scoring with 59 points.
Besides being selected as the New England Small College Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, her performance earned Sheridan a berth on the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association's All-America squad as a second-team selection.
She was the only freshman in the country so honored. At Tabor Academy in Marion, she was a high school All-American as a senior.
Allie Libby of Needham led Colby in scoring and was picked by Lacrosse Magazine as its preseason Division 3 Player of the Year. She has local roots; her family is originally from Cohasset.
Libby isn't the only player from the region to be recognized by Lacrosse Magazine. Kristen Kjellman of Westwood, an All-American at Northwestern University, was selected as its Division 1 Player of the Year. Kjellman and Libby played youth lacrosse together as ninth-graders.
"It's funny, everybody says Maryland and Virginia are lacrosse hotbeds," said Libby, "but here are two players named the best in the nation in their division and we grew up in neighboring towns."
Sophomore Lauren Strazzula and freshman Kathleen Kramer, who played on Norwell High School's 2005 South sectional championship team, are members of the varsity.
BC High roster
loaded with locals
The Boston College High School-Weymouth State Division 1A hockey final was just about an all-local affair because so many players on the BC High team are from the region.
Jeff Sullivan, the Eagles' captain, is from Quincy. Assistant captains Dan Smolinsky and Mark Donovan and teammate Bryan Kelly are from Plymouth. Luke Heller and Bob Stenbeck are from Scituate. Casey Shaughnessy is from Hanover, and Mike Wolf is from Foxborough.
Other seniors on the team include Mike Vasilchuk, John Rushton, and Ryan Millin of Dorchester.
This was their second straight state title. The only other team to win back-to-back Super Eight championships is Catholic Memorial of West Roxbury.
NU's Thornton faced
a tough Sox lineup
Northeastern University sophomore pitcher Tyler Thornton had some memorable moments, especially at Walpole High School. There was the game against Braintree in which he struck out 18 batters, and that was when Braintree was the top team in the Bay State league.
Also to his credit: The year he was a member of Walpole High's state championship team, which sported a 25-0 record.
At Northeastern, he is biding his time. He was a red-shirt as a freshman and last year he saw limited action, four games.
His best performance was 2 1/3 scoreless innings against the University of Indiana-Purdue during the Huskies' Florida swing.
This year during the Florida swing, he got to pitch against the Red Sox at City of Palms Park in Fort Myers . It was a performance he will not forget, even though he might wish parts would fade from memory.
Thornton faced four batters in the 11-0 exhibition loss.
He started the sixth inning by walking Ian Bladergoen. Then he walked Jeff Corsaletti. Both runners advanced on a passed ball. Thornton loaded the bases by walking Luis Soto. Scott White then connected for a grand slam and knocked Thornton out of the game.
Still, how many collegians get to pitch against the Red Sox?

Campbell's
hits count
Former Globe All-Scholastic baseball standout Nick Campbell of Raynham is carrying a big bat for Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I.
The freshman outfielder is hitting only .241 in the first 16 games, but he has made his hits count. The former Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High School star leads Bryant with 17 RBIs .
He isn't the only local player on the Bryant roster. Adam Vuolo of Walpole is turning into a solid closer. In nine appearances he has a 0.87 earned run average in 10 1/3 innings.
The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association ranks Bryant 11th in its Division 2 Northeast poll.![]()
