Wells is a no-show for Rockets game

Bonzi Wells's trying first season with the Houston Rockets took a strange turn when the veteran guard didn't join his team for its game last night against the Seattle SuperSonics. Wells was not with the team during its morning walkthrough and wasn't in the arena before the game, coach Jeff Van Gundy said. Wells left a voice message for Rockets athletic trainer Keith Jones saying he felt he was disrupting the chemistry of the team. "Once I know he's all right, then we'll take whatever the next step is," Van Gundy said. "We want to make sure he's all right first." Wells played five minutes in Sunday's win over Sacramento, but asked out of the game, Van Gundy said. Wells was activated Friday for the first time in 18 games . . . Heat forward James Posey was arrested on a drunken driving charge after police pulled him over for stopping in the middle of a road in Miami Beach . . . Leading scorer Michael Redd (knee injury) will miss the Milwaukee Bucks' final six games of the season, the team announced . . . Portland Trail Blazers rookie LaMarcus Aldridge is out for the season after his rapid heartbeat was found to be caused by Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome. The condition is not considered career-threatening.

Hampton is out for another season
Braves starter Mike Hampton will have surgery on his left elbow today in New York, sidelining him for the second straight season. Hampton, who will not be able to do any throwing for at least six months, is 53-48 since agreeing to a $121 million, eight-year contract with Colorado before the 2001 season. He is owed $14.5 million this year and $15 million in 2008. Hampton was traded to Atlanta (via Florida) in the 2002 offseason and is 32-20 for the Braves. He missed all of 2006 because of Tommy John surgery . . . Chris Carpenter underwent an MRI in St. Louis because of his ongoing problems with an inflamed right elbow and will miss a second consecutive start today for the Cardinals. The Cardinals will call up lefthander Randy Keisler, a former Yankees farmhand, to start tonight's game in Pittsburgh . . . Marlins righthander Ricky Nolasco was placed on the disabled list with elbow inflammation, and will be replaced in tonight's game against Milwaukee by Rick Vanden Hurk, a Holland native who has yet to pitch above Single A.

Bridgewater St. wins, 57-1, in baseball
Bridgewater State set a handful of NCAA Division 3 baseball records in a 57-1 seven-inning rout of Newbury College at Bridgewater. The win broke records for runs in a game, margin of victory, and RBIs in a game (54). Junior outfielder Steve Smith tied the Division 3 record for hits in a game with 7 and also had 7 runs and 10 RBIs. The Bears (8-6), who tied the NCAA record with 44 hits, scored 13 runs in the first inning, 9 in the second, 9 in the third, 16 in the fourth, 8 in the fifth, and 2 in the sixth . . . South Alabama's John Pelphrey was hired as basketball coach at Arkansas, a week after Creighton's Dana Altman took the job only to back out the following day. The Razorbacks introduced Pelphrey at a news conference on the floor at Bud Walton Arena -- an almost identical scene to the previous week when Altman arrived . . . Frank Martin was introduced as the successor to Bob Huggins as men's basketball coach at Kansas State, a week after Huggins abruptly quit to take the job at his alma mater, West Virginia . . . Wichita State coach Mark Turgeon is expected to be introduced today as Texas A&M's basketball coach, according to news reports. The Houston Chronicle reported the school had reached an agreement with Turgeon . . . After saying he would return for his junior season, Kansas forward Julian Wright has decided to enter the NBA draft . . . Former UCLA coach John Wooden was admitted to a Los Angeles-area hospital Sunday because of bleeding in the colon.

Sakic signs on for another season
Joe Sakic signed a one-year deal to remain with the Colorado Avalanche. Sakic had 36 goals and 64 assists this season, giving him 100 points for the first time since 2000-01. The deal came a day after the team ended the regular season a point shy of making the playoffs . . . Florida Panthers goalie Ed Belfour was arrested at a popular South Beach bar early yesterday after a scuffle with a Miami police officer. Belfour and teammate Ville Peltonen were at the bar when security guards from the club asked police to make Belfour leave, police said. The 41-year-old refused and pushed an officer, a police report said. The Panthers' season ended Saturday . . . Kim St. Pierre made 22 saves to help Canada beat Finland, 5-0, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, setting up a 10th straight Canada-United States final tonight in the women's world championships.

Johnson will try to master Conn. event
Zach Johnson, who held off Tiger Woods to win the Masters, committed to playing the Travelers Championship in June. The Travelers Championship, formerly known as the Greater Hartford Open and Buick Championship, will be held June 18-24 at the Tournament Players Club at River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn. . . . Broncos coach Mike Shanahan has signed a three-year contract extension, keeping him in Denver through 2011 . . . Joey Harrington signed with the Atlanta Falcons to back up Michael Vick at quarterback . . . Unseeded Ivo Karlovic of Croatia used his crushing serve to upset German Benjamin Becker, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3), in the first round of the US Clay Court Tennis Championships in Houston. Top seed Andy Roddick withdrew because of a hamstring injury . . . Olympic sprinter Tim Montgomery, once considered the fastest man on Earth until his world record was erased in the BALCO steroid scandal, pleaded guilty in New York to conspiracy in a multimillion-dollar bank fraud and money-laundering scheme. He could be sentenced to 37 to 46 months in prison . . . Harvard Stadium, the home field of the Boston Cannons, will host the Major League Lacrosse All-Star game July 8.
