Boen will take over as Brockton basketball coach

For 23 years, Brockton basketball coach Bob Boen took pride in developing the junior varsity boys' teams. Next season, he will get his chance to lead the program.

Boen has been selected as the varsity boys' basketball coach at Brockton and will replace Victor Ortiz, who retired this year.

Boen said he always wanted to be a varsity coach, and his experience will help with the transition.

"I was very happy to be the junior varsity coach because developing the players always made me feel good," Boen said.

Boen will be the seventh varsity coach in the program's history. He graduated from Brockton in 1971 and played two years on the basketball team. He gave up basketball to pursue track in his junior and senior years, but he still loved basketball.

Boen has been involved with the Brockton program for so long that he is familiar with most of the players when they reach high school. Last season, Brockton compiled a 16-6 record and lost in the second round of the state tournament to Boston College High School , the eventual state champion.

"We have a good group of kids coming back, and they're not just good players; they're real nice kids," he said.

Boen, a teacher at the Whitman School in Brockton, is not only responsible for basketball. For the last 35 years, he has also coached 6- and 7-year-old Little Leaguers.
