Braves manager Bobby Cox said third baseman Chipper Jones will be placed on the 15-day disabled list today with a bruised right hand. Jones has been experiencing pain in both hands since a base-running collision May 11 and had missed seven straight games before he received a cortisone shot following the game May 23, but noticed no improvement. Jones is batting .300 with 12 homers and 27 RBIs . . . Third baseman David Wright joined center fielder Carlos Beltran on the sideline for the New York Mets for last night's game against the Diamondbacks. Wright was a late scratch from the starting lineup, complaining of back spasms. Beltran, who left Thursday night's game against San Francisco after a collision with first baseman Rich Aurilia of the Giants, had an MRI on his bruised right knee. The results were negative and he was listed as day-to-day . . . Detroit designated hitter Gary Sheffield and San Diego catcher Josh Bard were suspended for three games each by the commissioner's office for confrontations with umpires in separate games the previous night. Both players filed appeals, meaning they cannot be penalized until after hearings and decisions on the appeals . . . Salomon Torres's latest blown save cost him his job as the Pirates' closer, with righthander Matt Capps taking over the role and Torres again becoming a setup reliever. Manager Jim Tracy made the move after Torres couldn't hold a 2-0 lead in the ninth inning of a 4-2, 11-inning loss to the San Diego Padres Thursday night -- the third time Torres has given away a multirun lead in the ninth this season . . . Rickie Weeks received a cortisone injection in his right wrist, and the Milwaukee Brewers said a diagnosis was confirmed that the second baseman has tendinitis in the wrist. He was placed on the DL earlier this week.

Terrell Owens will get his $3 million roster bonus from the Dallas Cowboys even though, like several other starters, he hasn't been practicing with the team. Owens will get that bonus, plus a $5 million salary for the 2007 season, since he was still on the roster yesterday, when he was again absent from voluntary organized team activities . . . Odell Thurman was sentenced to six days in a treatment program and two years' probation, settling his drunken driving conviction in Hamilton County, Ohio. Thurman remains suspended by the NFL for the 2007 season for violating its substance abuse policy.
