Broncos deal DT Warren to Raiders

The Denver Broncos shipped defensive tackle Gerard Warren to the rival Raiders for an undisclosed 2008 draft pick. Warren didn't fit in the system put in place by new Broncos defensive coordinator Jim Bates, which requires large interior linemen who hold the point of attack rather than penetrate. Warren had 51 tackles and 2 1/2 sacks last season . . . D.J. Shockley, who was battling for the Falcons' backup quarterback spot behind Michael Vick replacement Joey Harrington, will undergo surgery next week for a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered last Friday against Buffalo . . . Trent Green was tabbed as the Dolphins' starting quarterback, ending training camp speculation that he was battling Cleo Lemon for the job . . . Giants cornerback Sam Madison suffered a pulled left hamstring in Sunday's 13-12 exhibition victory over Baltimore and his status for New York's season opener at Dallas Sept. 9 is uncertain, coach Tom Coughlin said. Safety Will Demps is expected to miss three weeks with a dislocated elbow, and receiver Michael Jennings is out for the season with a torn Achilles' tendon . . . Panthers linebacker Dan Morgan will play in a game for the first time since suffering at least the fifth concussion of his career in last season's opener when he takes the field Friday against the Patriots . . . The Lions activated two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Shaun Rogers from the physically unable-to-perform list.

Mets pick up veteran Conine from Reds
The Mets acquired Jeff Conine from the Reds for two minor leaguers, adding a 41-year-old player who has two World Series rings. Conine can play first base or outfield. He is batting .265 with six homers and 32 RBIs . . . Pedro Martínez allowed two unearned runs over five innings for Single A St. Lucie in his most impressive outing since the Mets pitcher began throwing after offseason shoulder surgery . . . Phillies second baseman Chase Utley has been cleared to begin swinging a bat for the first time since he broke his hand July 26. A timetable for Utley's return will be set later in the week Rangers closer Akinori Otsuka will seek a third opinion on his sore right elbow from noted orthopedist James Andrews. Otsuka hasn't pitched since July 1 . . . John Hattig homered and drove in two runs as Syracuse defeated Pawtucket, 8-6, at McCoy Stadium . . . Jose Sanchez limited Portland to three hits and one run as the Binghamton Mets handed the Sea Dogs their fourth straight home loss, 6-2 . . . William "Wild Bill" Hagy, an Orioles fan who led cheers from the upper deck at the old Memorial Stadium in the 1970s and '80s, died at age 68.

Harvard-Brown matchup rescheduled
Harvard's game against Brown has been rescheduled for Saturday, Sept. 22 at 7:30 p.m. at Harvard Stadium. The game had originally been scheduled for the previous day . . . The University of Massachusetts is ranked third in the preseason Coaches Football Championship Subdivision poll, receiving one first-place vote. Appalachian State, which defeated UMass, 28-17, in last season's Division 1-AA national championship game, is atop the poll, receiving the other 27 first-place votes. The University of New Hampshire is fifth, while Yale is 24th. In the Football Championship Subdivision preseason poll, Appalachian State and UMass are again first and third, while UNH is sixth and Yale 24th . . . Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis said freshman quarterback Jimmy Clausen's citation for transporting alcohol as a minor is a simple case of ignorance of the law. Weis said he himself didn't know it was illegal for someone who's underage to drive someone who is of legal drinking age to a liquor store to buy alcohol. Clausen, 19, was cited by Indiana State Excise Police June 23 outside a South Bend liquor store along with a 23-year-old who bought two bottles of vodka, a bottle of whiskey, and a case of beer . . . Kansas State tight end Rashaad Norwood was suspended after being arrested twice early Sunday at the same location and charged with domestic battery, criminal damage to property, criminal trespassing, and obstruction of the legal process . . . Iowa standout receiver Dominique Douglas and reserve receiver Anthony Bowman were suspended from the team after being arrested Sunday for unauthorized use of a credit card . . . West Virginia players James Thomas and Ellis Lankster were arrested in Morgantown over the weekend and charged with transferring and receiving stolen property . . . Ronnie Andrews, 41, the son of Florida State defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews, was found dead outside his father's house Sunday evening in Tallahassee. Foul play was not suspected.

Nextel Cup to try for rare Tuesday race
The second straight day of rain washed out another effort by NASCAR to run the 3M Performance 400 Nextel Cup race at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Mich. The race, which was originally scheduled for Sunday, was rescheduled for 10 a.m. today. Officials said it would be the first time in NASCAR's modern era, dating to 1973, that a race has been run on a Tuesday . . . A 31-year-old man was shot during an altercation outside the home of Washington Wizards guard DeShawn Stevenson. Stevenson, 26, was asleep at his Orlando, Fla., home when shots were fired about 4 a.m., police said . . . Second-seeded Tommy Robredo advanced to the third round of the Pilot Pen at New Haven with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Marc Gicquel. Play was suspended in the night matches because of rain . . . Three-time defending champion Roger Federer was seeded No. 1 for the US Open for the fourth consecutive year, and Justine Henin topped the women's seedings . . . Jockey Winston Thompson is expected to miss more than two months after suffering a broken left ankle when he was unseated from his mount, Salty's Actor, in Sunday's second race at Suffolk Downs.
