Annika Sorenstam's worst year since she was a rookie offered one last hope yesterday afternoon in the ADT Championship when she was among three players desperate to claim the last two spots in the chase for $1 million. Sorenstam hit a quick hook with a 5-iron into the face of a bunker, blasted over the green, and was eliminated in a 3-for-2 playoff at Trump International in West Palm Beach, Fla., ending her year without a victory for the first time since 1994. Cavaliers' Hughes sidelined a month
Larry Hughes, Cleveland's fragile guard, will miss at least four weeks with a deep bone bruise in his left leg. Hughes hurt his leg during a game Nov. 4 at Phoenix when he collided with Suns guard Leandro Barbosa. The 6-foot-5-inch, 185-pound Hughes has spent a large chunk of his career on the sideline with an assortment of injuries. Knee surgery KOs Oregon QB Dixon
Quarterback Dennis Dixon will have surgery on the left knee that buckled early in No. 2 Oregon's upset loss at Arizona Thursday night, costing the Ducks a shot at the national championship and likely spoiling his chance to win the Heisman Trophy. Dixon tore his anterior cruciate ligament during Oregon's Nov. 3 victory over Arizona State, according to coach Mike Bellotti, but he had rested it and felt like he was ready to play against the Wildcats.Tennis
ATP combats gambling with new rule
Players must notify officials within 48 hours if they hear any information about gambling or match-fixing under a new ATP rule. The measure was approved during a three-day ATP board meeting. Suffolk figures went up at 2007 meet
Suffolk Downs posted significant increases in daily attendance and on-track live handle for the 2007 meet, which ended last Saturday. Average daily attendance for the 100-day live racing meet increased 22 percent over last year, from 2,687 to 3,288, while average daily handle was up 14 percent, from $107,385 to $122,702. Total purses went up 12 percent, from $10.9 million to $12.2 million . . . A local investor group trying to buy the Nashville Predators reached an agreement with city officials on changes to the arena lease.
