Central Florida to be on '08 BC slate

Boston College has an agreement in principle to add Central Florida to its 2008 schedule. The Knights will replace Army. It would be a home game for the Eagles, who were originally scheduled to play at Army Sept. 13. BC is to visit Central Florida in 2011.

Richmond coach Dave Clawson resigned and accepted a job as Tennessee's offensive coordinator . . . Purdue coach Joe Tiller will retire after next season and be replaced by associate coach Danny Hope.

Major League Baseball launched a department of investigations, a permanent branch of the commissioner's office responsible for looking into drug use in the sport. Adopting another of George Mitchell's recommendations, MLB is establishing a tip line for team employees to make the commissioner's office aware of violations of drug, betting, and other rules. It was unclear whether the activities the unit could participate in would have to be negotiated with the players' association . . . Free agent outfielder Mike Cameron and the Milwaukee Brewers reached a preliminary agreement on a $7 million, one-year contract that includes a club option for 2009. Cameron, who turned 35 earlier this month, is suspended for the first 25 games of next season after testing positive a second time for a banned stimulant . . . The home of the Cleveland Indians will be called Progressive Field as part of a naming rights deal with car insurance company Progressive Corp. that is worth nearly $58 million over 16 years. The stadium had been known as Jacobs Field since it opened in 1994 . . . Closer Chad Cordero and the Washington Nationals agreed to a $6.2 million, one-year contract . . . Reliever Eddie Guardado and the Texas Rangers agreed to a $2 million, one-year contract that allows the 16-year veteran to make an additional $4 million in performance bonuses.

Pacers center David Harrison was suspended for five games without pay by the NBA for violating the league's anti-drug program . . . Nuggets forward Nene took an indefinite leave of absence from the team to take care of a personal medical issue . . . Warriors guard Troy Hudson will be out for at least three months after undergoing surgery on his left hip . . . Former Heat star Glen Rice was arrested on a felony battery charge after police say he beat a man he found hiding in his estranged wife's closet.

The US men's volleyball team qualified for the Beijing Olympics by beating Puerto Rico, 25-20, 25-19, 25-20, in the final of the NORCECA Continental Olympic Qualifying Championship in Caguas, Puerto Rico. The Americans finished the tournament 5-0 and didn't drop a set . . . Denis Hamlett, an assistant since the Chicago Fire's inaugural 1998 season, was promoted to head coach . . .
